WANDERERS owner Steve Hayes hopes victory and promotion in front of a packed Adams Park on Saturday will create a closer link between the fans and the players.

Hayes is hoping to get a five-figure crowd for the crunch clash against Southend United and has urged fans who haven’t already bought tickets to hurry up and do so.

He believes the rapport between supporters and players is getting stronger – and he says that’s all down to manager Gary Waddock.

Hayes told the Bucks Free Press: “When I came as a fan in 1993 the first thing I noticed that was really good about the club was the fans and the players were quite close – they came into the bars after the games and it just doesn’t happen like that now.

“What we have tried to do under Gary Waddock is bring them closer and he’s bought into that. There’s a very good relationship between Gary, the players and the fans that needs to get bigger and bigger.

“What we are really asking is for people to come along on Saturday nice and early and don’t be in a hurry to go anywhere because the players will be around afterwards. The closer the fans get to the players, the better, because it will help the club move forward.

“That’s what drew me to Wycombe and that’s where we hope to go again.”

He added: “We were very careful picking Gary Waddock. I said at the time we appointed him we want a manager who will be here a number of years. He works incredibly hard.”

Looking ahead to the Southend match Hayes said: “I absolutely can’t wait. All the lads want to see a full house. We got 9,600 against Notts County and we weren’t playing anywhere near the football we are now.

“It’s the one game of the season we need people to think, ‘I’m going to turn up’. These guys have worked incredibly hard all season – if you can help them it will be a good day out.”
