DUE to the road layout, the cul-de-sac where I live has always been a quiet backwater in spite of its proximity to Wycombe town centre. That all came to an abrupt halt on the afternoon of the royal wedding, when our close played host to several hundred party-goers who certainly knew how to have a good time!

My neighbours gave up their private car spaces in order that visitors could enjoy the convenience of parking within yards of the music and all that the organisers had laid on.

The booze-fuelled bonhomie went on well into the evening and it wasn’t until about 11.30 that our windows stopped vibrating to the rap music that could be heard along the entire street. It looked for all the world that the residents of Wyatt Close knew how to have a good time.

There would, however, be one small flaw in this assumption; it wasn’t our party. It had been organised by residents from the adjacent Gibbs Close. But as this close lacked space, visitors ended up utilising our road via a ten yard footpath. In fact the bulk of the rave was in our private car park. No prior warning given, no permission sought from the residents’ leaseholders association.

The aftermath: litter, broken bottles, and 11 complaints to the police. Oh, yes, and a regrettable end to what had otherwise been a very pleasant and memorable day. One raver told me that this was a ‘once in a lifetime party’. I’m holding him to that!
