FOUR days after being voted onto Amersham Town Council, Mimi Harker has been named as the town’s new mayor.

Already a Chiltern District Council cabinet member, she was voted as one of two Tory representatives for the Weedon Hill ward at Thursday’s local elections – before being voted mayor at her first-ever town council meeting on the Monday.

She was nominated by the outgoing mayor, Martin Phillips.

Cllr Harker said she had “big shoes to fill” in following Cllr Phillips and his predecessor Martin King but said she was looking forward to the task.

She said: “It’s a total and utter honour to represent your town. It’s a real privilege and I want to do the best possible job I can do and I’m going to really enjoy it.

“I’m so excited about all the different things happening over the next year. I can’t even begin to describe how proud I am to be representing Amersham.

“Everyone in Amersham should be proud of their town. The community wants this to be a living, thriving centre and that’s what we’ve got.

“People recognise it’s somewhere that’s lovely to be and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

She said one of her main aims was to do more for young people in the town and has her eyes on securing an adidas-sponsored multi-sport activity court for Amersham as part of the build-up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Cllr Harker said: “Our young people here totally and truly deserve something so wonderful.”
