Dogs drown after falling through ice

FIREFIGHTERS praised two dog owners for not trying to rescue their pets from a lake.

The dogs had both fallen through the ice at Dorney Lake, South Bucks, on Saturday afternoon.

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said the owners did the right thing by calling for help, rather than venturing out on to the ice themselves.

A spokesman said: "It is desperately sad that both incidents ended in tragedy. We appreciate that a pet is part of the family and that the natural instinct is to try to do something immediately.

"It is a difficult enough job for firefighters and can end in human tragedy if owners go on to the ice themselves. We are grateful the owners had the presence of mind to stay on the bank and call for help."

Firefighters from Beaconsfield attended both incidents. The body of one of the dogs was retrieved but officers were unable to find the other.

In another incident, firefighters successfully rescued a horse which had become stuck in a frozen lake in Hay Lane, Fulmer.

I feel for the dog owners but at least they did the right thing and we are not reading a story about a loss of human life.

This is very sad but a timely reminder not to allow dogs on any frozen water. I don't walk my dog near lakes/canals when they are frozen over, it's not worth the risk.

Nobody is perfect Melanie1, I should think they are struggling to deal with the guilt as it is without having to risk the thought of reading your "I dont walk my dogs near lakes" comment - have heart!

These poor people must be in bits. My heart goes out to them.

Re:Vocal local. I feel I must defend Melanie1 as it didn't come across to me that she was castigating the owners in the story.

This is terribly sad news, as a dog owner my heart goes out
to them.

Thank you Cressex Offender. I was not criticising the owners, they no doubt are racked with guilt. However, they themselves would no doubt hope that their tragedy will educate other dog owners/walkers to not make the same tragic mistake.

This is really sad, i can't imagine having to just stand there and watch as your pet dies. But i agree that it's so dangerous to try to rescue them yourself. Best idea is to stay well away from frozen lakes etc. surely?!

Since when did we need a pat-on-the-head from the Fire Brigade before undertaking something that is by many considered natural? Ok, if these people might have got into difficulties while rescuing their dogs, that should be a risk they assess when undertaking such ventures as it is with letting their 'beloved' pets venture off near frozen water. The idea that nobody tries to save the life of another whether it be animal or human-being because the authorities determine it not to be a good idea is when we truly fail at being human-beings in my opinion.

Get a cat instead, much more clever, and also safer, as an owner would never dive in after them, they are more clever than dogs and so will navigate themseleves back to the shore, they wil need a towel down though to be fair.

Can't stand cats but at least they walk themselves.
