Head boy Sam Bridgeworth defends Beaconsfield teenagers

A HEAD boy says youngsters in Beaconsfield have been “grossly misrepresented” - following claims by the town mayor that his school’s reputation is in decline.

Mayor Richard Keith wrote an open letter to the headteacher of The Beaconsfield School last month, accusing a group of pupils of “anti-social behaviour” in the Old Town.

He said their behaviour was “adding to the decline in the local reputation” of the school, and felt the headteacher should be made aware of the problems (see link below).

But at a town council meeting on Thursday, 18-year-old Sam Bridgeworth said: “The young people of Beaconsfield are grossly misrepresented.

“Though there may be a small minority engaging in anti-social behaviour, the majority of our students are part of a caring, supportive community where they are stimulated and challenged....

“The town council should perhaps look at more activities for young people to do.”

Sam and head girl Connie Faulkner, 17, also listed all the positive things that pupils have been involved in, including charity fundraising, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and a joint-project with pensioners at a care home.

Headteacher John Fletcher told the meeting: “The students in my school are not always perfect, I’m sure you weren’t always perfect as well.

“The vast majority are fine upstanding members of the community. Some of them will sit in here in the future I’m sure.”

It was suggested that councillors carry out a survey of school pupils to gather ideas for projects that would give them more to do in the town.

A BMX and skate park have previously been suggested.

Youngsters are always misrepresented by the selfish few pupils who wish to ruin it for others. The same problem in Flackwell Heath where a few youngsters are causing problems but all of them get tainted.

I say bring back Alex Russel, he was the best thing that happened to that school. As soon as that Fletcher took over it started declining.

Sam and Connie should not have to defend themselves against this bullying mayor.
.
The BFP never have never tried to find out why Richard Keith has such a down of this particular school.
.
May I suggest he also look at little closer to home for examples of bad behaviour of young people in Beaconsfield.
.
Nobody is perfect Mr Keith.

Well done to the lad for having the courage and the conviction to stand up for himself and his School.

Absolutely well done to Sam for sticking up for his well behaved school friends. However, the school should be made aware of antisocial behaviour when it occurs and it should be stamped out. Most of the kids are kind and considerate but there are also a very small minority that are not. The mayor was correct bring this to the attention of the school - if we all sat back and did nothing or said nothing how would the school know there is an issue?

I agree that the mayor has a right to highlight the antisocial behaviour in the old town but his criticism should be aimed at their parents, the lack of police enforcement ..and lastly their school.

I find it very disappointing that the Mayor of Beaconsfield would make a comment about The Beaconsfield School's so called 'decline in reputation.' Where does he get this opinion from? Are there any facts to substantiate this claim? Please, Mr Mayor, do share your reasons for your belief that the school is in decline as I have 2 children attending the school and they are happy, involved, academically enjoying and successful in their studies. They have made lovely friends all of whom I would not hesitate having to my home. As Mayor you should be encouraging the school, the teachers, the students and staff not publicly slandering the hard work of all those involved at the school. When there is a problem, then work with the headteacher not against him to make things better for the school and our community.

The Mayor was right to make a point, however the way in which it was put forward was wrong. He should not have written an open letter to the head as this was bound to cause controversy and upset, why not a personal letter and invitation to hold a meeting to discuss the issue?
And can it be proven that all anti-social behaviour by teenagers in Beaconsfield is caried out by pupils from that school?
Unwise and slightly foolish if well intended.
