Oxford-Wycombe rail line moves a step closer

Transport Secretary Justine Greening Transport Secretary Justine Greening

A TRAIN service connecting Oxford and High Wycombe for the first time in a generation moved a step closer after the Transport Secretary said today she is "minded to approve" plans for a new railway line.

Concerns about the impact a new branch line from Bicester to Oxford would have on rare bats and great crested newts had held up the scheme.

But the Secretary of State for Transport Justine Greening said she is satisfied there is "now unlikely to be an impediment" over the project because of the impact on wildlife.

It means the multi million plans are now set to be rubber stamped by the Transport Secretary.

A new line will be built at Bicester which will connect Oxford to the Marylebone-Birmingham route, meaning it will now be possible to get a direct train from Wycombe to Oxford for the first time in more than 40 years.

Chiltern Railways, the company behind the plans, had hoped to have the line in place next year but because of delays it will now not open until 2014 at the earliest.

Can't see it being very attractive for commuters
as I'm sure the journey time will be twice that of car or coach.

I'd rather travel by train than risk my life on the Oxford Tube coach, they're driven by idiots.

It will be interesting to see if the anti-HS2 brigade object to this new line, particularly as it may affect a bunch of old bats, newts and possibly a pear tree.

At one stage there was a plan to re-open the rail line from High Wycombe to Bourne End, Marlow and Maidenhead; it would be nice if the HW design allowed for this later.

27 miles by coach/car, 48 by rail. I wonder what distance the rail operator will use for setting the fairs?

The "new line" is a couple of hundred yards long, cutting the corner of an area that has recently been heavily redeveloped with housing. It only connects two existing lines that currently cross eachother.
.
Strange how they didn't give a toss about the newts when planning and building the houses.

The project will deliver High Wycombe to Oxford journey time of 38 minutes - by car the equivalent journey centre-to-centre is around an hour.

So here I am standing on Oxford station and I am boarding a Chiltern train to London. When it departs it starts going northwards, slows down for the bats, stops at a few small places and then eventually starts going south. Surely I would be better to board a train to Paddington from Oxford and Mr Shooter you would have been better to have opened the old Princes Risborough to Thame line then extended it to a new station at Wheatley by the M40 and then extended the line to Oxford.

Wow that nearly as good as the HS2 time between central London to central Birmingham (45 mins).

Down with the car.
The future's bright - the future is trains

Timbers how do you get your figures, john radcliffe hospital is 28 miles, so oxford town centre is 4 max on top, so on a good run Oxford in 30 mins john radcliffe is 20 to 25 mins, are you estimating travelling time by going at 20 mph

It would be very costly and difficult to relay the track between Risborough and Thame and onwards.

Currently if you want to travel from Risborough to Oxford by public transport you would have to catch a train to Haddenham and bus or a bus/train to Aylesbury and a bus from there. Much easier, quicker and hopefully less expensive!??

Big Bert I know it could be very costly to relay the track between Princes Risborough and Thame and onwards but this route to Oxford would be far more appealing to commuters and other travellers alike. The Bicester Chord plan is nonsensical especially as trains to Oxford would mean a reduction in services to Birmingham.

The main cost would come from the crossing of the M40/A40. As for the reduction in services, they wouldn't have to reduce the number of Birmingham services, the Risborough trains could be extended through.

Big Bert the planned High Wycombe to Oxford link via a new "Bicester Chord" would not only affect the Birmingham services without a doubt and might limit the expansion of these but also it might cause pathing problems for the proposed East-West Rail Link. Two added attractions for the restoration of services on the Princes Risborough to Thame to Oxford route could be the potential it has for freight traffic and also the possible running of steam excursions on Sundays.
