Debbie McGee: 'Paul's tricks never get old'
AFTER 35 years together you would expect ‘the lovely’ Debbie McGee has seen every trick Paul Daniels has up his sleeve - but you’d be wrong.
Because despite the fact the magical maestros celebrate their silver wedding anniversary next year, Paul continues to surprise his beloved sidekick, even if it means more housework for poor Debbie.
"He surprises me all the time. He is always on the internet researching and looking for inspiration. He just has one of those brains, he never rests on his laurels and no show or trick is the same", she said.
"It is fun, I’ll be doing the washing up and he’ll just burst in the kitchen saying, ‘put the dishes down Debbie and tell me what you think of this trick’. But our house is covered in stuff all the time as a result!"
Magic’s most famous couple are currently on th eir latest tour, Hair Today Gone Tomorrow, which lands at The Elgiva next week.
They are no stranger to the Chesham theatre and love making the trip from their Wargrave home to south Bucks, an area Debbie holds close to her heart.
People lined the streets to watch Debbie arrive at the Beaconsfield Chambers in a horse-drawn carriage as the duo tied the knot in 1988.
She said: "I remember coming out on to the balcony and so many people turned up, it must have caused major traffic jams. It was great.
"We love Buckinghamshire, it is a beautiful place. I still go to the same hairdresser in Chalfont and Paul has family in Denham."
While Debbie is most famous for being the wife and glamorous assistant of Paul Daniels, it is important to remind you of her undoubted talents.
The 53-year-old is a classically trained dancer who learnt her trade at the Royal Ballet School before joining the Iranian National Ballet.
She later toured with music big-hitters ABBA before teaming up with Paul Daniels for record breaking tours and prime-time TV smashes.
And Debbie now hosts a Sunday morning breakfast show on BBC Radio Berkshire. But despite her own success, does she ever get fed up of being prominently known as Paul Daniels’ sidekick?
She said: "It has never bothered me, I don’t know why, maybe I should, but I am very happy and comfortable with what I have achieved."
But, back to their latest show, what can we expect and how do the royal couple of illusions continue to keep it fresh after all these years?
Debbie said: "People have an idea based on what they’ve seen on TV.
"But everyone is always surprised at just how funny Paul is. It is a fun show and they enjoy the atmosphere as much as they enjoyed the magic.
"It’s never the same show two nights running and that has been the same for the past 30-odd years."
Hair Today Gone Tomorrow takes to The Elgiva Theatre on April 14. Tickets cost £19.50 from 01494 582900 or visit www.elgiva.com
