TALKS over a planned supermarket in Amersham are set to resume in the autumn, according to a leading councillor.

Potential legal issues have delayed proposals that would see Sainsbury's take over and redevelop the Iceland store in Sycamore Road.

An agreement signed by Sainsbury's and Chiltern District Council forbids anyone else from developing the site - but that deal was made in 2009, and progress on the plans has stalled since then.

The proposals were discussed by the council's cabinet last week, which was held in private due to the sensitive financial aspects of the deal.

Council Leader Nick Rose told the Bucks Free Press: "We decided we want to take things a step further and get some more detailed advice and reports that will enable members to make a more informed decision.

"There are issues around parking, which is fairly well known, and possible legal issues. We need to get more specific and specialist advice and make sure it doesn't expose the council to any risk."

Cllr Rose said that process is likely to be completed by the autumn, meaning the plans could take a bigger step towards becoming reality then.

Sainsbury's already owns the land but is yet to make a formal planning application for a new store.
