RUNNER beans grown by pupils at Holtspur School are off to the Chelsea Flower Show next week. Members of the gardening club were successful in a 'Miracle Grow' competition to produce vegetables for a special stand at the show. Parent Laura Barton, who runs the club, said: "The children had to grow the purple and white runner beans from seed through to maturity...just ready to fruit for the show, a very difficult thing to do considering the weather we have been having.” She thanked Beaconsfield Garden Centre for donating the pots, which have been decorated by the club.

A GROUP aiming to create safe cycling routes in Beaconsfield says it could cost up to £25,000 to install the necessary signs across the town. The Beaconsfield Cycle Path Action Group is already bidding to secure funding, with help from the county council. The group is looking at five possible cycle routes to link the A40, Holtspur and schools with the station, shops and town centre. Campaigners were due to present the plans at the town hall as we went to press last night.

BEACONSFIELD Freemasons are hoping to raise £5,000 for the Chiltern Centre for Disabled Children, which helps families in Berks, Bucks and Oxon. The Henley-based charity specialises in short-breaks and day care for youngsters with learning difficulties and complex medical health needs, but has had its funding slashed by the government. The freemasons hope to narrow the funding gap by staging a family fun day at Fawley Hill, Henley, on Sunday, from 11am. A CARE home in Beaconsfield held a 1940s tea dance last Thursday to mark the 67th anniversary of VE Day. Sunrise, on Station Road, opened its doors to the public for the event, which included an array of patriotic songs by local musician David Carter.

ORAGNISERS are looking for small businesses to sponsor the Beaconsfield Games - a sporting event to be held on July 7. The Games will include a mobility scooter dash, tug-of-war and poetry contests, plus dozens of other events. Town councillor Matt Denyer, one of the organisers, said: "We’re looking for small businesses to sponsor certain events and it can be anything from £50 to sponsoring the whole event." MORE than 100 pupils travelled to Davenies School in Beaconsfield last Tuesday to take part in a Maths challenge. Davenies said its sports hall "exuded a contented hum of industry, enjoyment and cooperation" as the boys and girls, representing 30 different schools, worked on a range of mathematical problems.

TWO teenagers from Seer Green are set to travel to America to compete in a skipping competition. Tiffany Branscombe, 15, and Georgia Toay, 13, of the Seer Green Skippers club, qualified to represent Great Britain in the youth section of the World Rope Skipping Championships in Florida in July.
