'Green fireball' streaks across sky

File photo File photo

‘A GREEN fireball’ streaked across the sky above Beaconsfield on Friday night, according to motorist Graham Lee.

The freelance photographer thinks he might have seen a meteor while driving home on the M40 and discovered several others had reported the sighting online.

Graham, from Whiteleaf near Princes Risborough, told the BFP: “I was on the M40 coming to the Beaconsfield junction at about 11.30pm and it came from left to right....

“It only lasted a few seconds and I thought it was a firework, but thought crickey that’s far too large and far too fast.

“It was as bright as the sun and looked like a green fireball. I felt quite privileged to have seen it.”

A website called The Latest Worldwide Meteor Reports lists several sightings of ‘fireballs’, ‘flashes’ and ‘green lights’ at about the same time, in various locations around Oxfordshire.

Ralph Campbell, Chairman of Aylesbury Astronomical Society, said Graham had probably seen a meteor, which is also known as a shooting star.

He said: “They are not very frequent but occasionally you do see them. It’s basically a lump of material from outer space coming into the earth’s atmosphere. Because it’s going so fast it heats up and melts away.

“Very occasionally they will reach the earth and make a big hole in the ground, but fortunately we’ve avoided any really big ones up till now.”

If it was really as bright as the sun we'd all have seen it. Daylight, green daylight no less, at 11:30pm is pretty hard to miss!

Whats that a "file photo" of?

Its neither green nor a ball. I'll grant that there might be a bit of fire in it though.

Must be all sorts of small objects coming through the atmosphere all the time, most of which we are never aware of.

If it's extraterrestrials, I'm pretty sure that Frogmoor would be the preferred landing site.

Is that why it's always left so empty...?

Just in case.

I think they've already been Plus... the "fountain" on Frogmoor was obviously just a cover up and the "broken" circular fountain discs just mask the landing site...!

Maybe the remaining fountain circle pulses out coded light messages to potential galactic invasion fleets in the middle of the night....

TopCat2000, the 'Superheroes meet' in Wycombe is probably no coincidence!!!

You're definitely onto something there... and the lights on the front of Eden that look like they're blasting up into the sky must contain some sort of transportation device to waiting ships in orbit... we'd better not reveal any more of the Men in Black (or possibly more likely the Men in White (coats!)) will come and take us away...! ;)

The Council should obviously up its 'encounter' budget and put Wycombe on the galactic map!!!

'Frogmoorology'...

I could get into that.

PS: Is there anything in space named after Wycombe? A crater on the moon? A moon? An asteroid?

Well at around 10.30pm on Friday night I watched what was a green glow in the distance from Flackwell towards Beaconsfield and I mentioned it to a passer by. But this green thing did not appear to be moving at all.

It was like a large plane light in the sky but was green, not flashing and not moving at all. I watched it for several minutes as I walked up from the roundabout towards the main shops and it still was not moving. I looked away and looked back and it was gone. I wasn't seeing things, I am not mad and was not drunk, there was definitely a green thing in the sky. The mystery deepens.

Zorro on a bad day?

So BFreeP has not only got us speculating about what Mr Lee could have seen but also what the subject of their file photo could possibly be....

It's 2-for-1...!

My goodness - I do believe you may be right! And have you ever stopped to consider all the ramps and easy-access facilities that we've been installing in buildings and on buses and trains for the last few years? We've made ourselves sitting ducks for a Dalek invasion! I'll bet they are sitting there behind the moon, biding their time, waiting for a signal to attack us!
