Give leftover council snacks to homeless, says Lib Dem
3:03pm Tuesday 3rd July 2012 in News By James Nadal
snacks such as sandwiches, leftover after meetings, should go to charities for homeless, says Cllr Simon Parker
LEFTOVER sandwiches and snacks not eaten at council meetings should be offered to the hungry or homeless, a councillor says.
Councillor Simon Parker has called for 'nonsensical' regulations to be ignored to ensure decent food goes to a good home rather than being thrown in the bin.
After recently discovering that food provided for councillors after evening meetings was just discarded if not eaten, the Liberal Democrat asked homeless charities if they would welcome such snacks.
He said at a Wycombe District Council meeting last night: “ I've been assured that in the case of the YMCA in Cressex this would be eagerly received by residents who are not always assured of an evening meal.
“I understand the health and safety issues often cited as reasons why this cannot take place.
“Again, can I ask for her reassurance that as a council we should seek to circumvent any nonsensical regulations which prevents good food from reaching the mouths of the hungry, rather than consigning it to the dustbin?”
Cllr Jean Teesdale, Cabinet Member responsible for council food, said: “I have investigated the practicalities and things are not that simple.
“Over recent years efforts have been made to minimise the amount of refreshments left over after meetings.
“The action we are taking will, I anticipate, ensure the amounts of leftover food will be minimal so there will not be sufficient quantities to make it a viable proposition.”
The Conservative explained that once food has gone above eight degrees Celsius it must be consumed or thrown away, according to advice given by health and safety experts.
She added: “Whilst I appreciate the sentiment of your question I can't support anything that will cause risk.”
The food is paid for by the council.
This year it cut the budget for refreshments for 2012/13 from £11,100 to £7,500.
The council pointed out that this is merely the budget and not necessarily what will be spent.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided for all meetings and sandwiches are as well if the start time is 7pm and the meeting lasts more than an hour.
In 2007, the BFP revealed WDC overspent on their designated refreshment fund the previous year by £806 making it the council's most expensive for food since 2002.
Those same statistics showed across all three south Buckinghamshire district councils, councillors snacked on an annual total of £32,117 worth of sandwiches.

They should do what everyone else has to do and take their own sandwiches to work, or have dinner before they go.

BFP know how to do these things, I request please that you put in a freedom of information request to ask exactly how much of their budget is spent per year on free snacks and drinks for the council members.
As a matter of safety I would prefer street lights to be left on at night and for the council to save money by stopping these free lunches. It is not right and especially so in these times of austerity. It is also not needed. Councillors are not poor neglected children that need feeding, they get paid a wage just like the rest of us.

Why not eat before going to meetings, when I work a full day then have to go out I eat before going out so why can't Cllrs do the same? What's wrong with the fast food chains in the town as the Cllrs want more money to come into the town maybe they should start by eating in these places before they go to meetings!!
Surely for all the people that are employed in this so called council they would have vending machines too yes!!! Why not dig your hand in your pocket instead of spending or should I say wasting my hard earned cash on tea, coffee and nice little sandwiches!!!

No way do we have sandwiches etc at meetings. We don't have any drinks - if we want a drink we bring our own.
I think it is appalling to be honest.
And as for giving their leftovers to the homeless... well giving a person a curled up sandwich that has been left in a warm room all afternoon is the best way to give them food poisoning.

If could be tricky distributing the food as it would be difficult avoiding the scenario of it looking like the masters are giving their left-overs to the peasants....
~
Make the Councillors bring their own sandwiches to the meetings and save on the public purse.

They are cutting services and turning off street lights in some areas so they can have free sandwiches. I'm sure most people will not be comfortable with that.

Surely people recall the MP's expenses saga when clearly people have to eat wherever they happen to be located - so why should an employer pick up the tab ?

Private companies are one thing but the way the council is funded, i.e. through everyone's tax, is the very reason why they shouldn't get free meals.
I would rather my tax be spent on schools, street lights and keeping libraries open!

As for giving the leftovers to the homeless, I am not sure they would even accept it.
If Simon Parker wants to help, then set up proper food kitchens and beds for the homeless. Not leftovers.

Why can't they have something to eat and drink before the meeting, have the meeting, then go and get something to eat afterwards (and pay for it!) if they are still hungry?
It's what everyone else has to do!

Do you have access to a private policeforce, fire service?
Presumably you have access to a private ambulance as well.
What about your dustbins? Who empties them?
Do you keep your own roads swept?
Are your children ( if you have any) educated privately.
I am contributing more to my pension and I have absolutely no problem with that at all. In fact when have I ever complained about paying more into my pension? I haven't because I know I am lucky to have one. I would also NEVER strike about pensions and I have nothing but contempt for my colleagues that do.
I do not complain about working in the public sector - I absolutely love my job and would not do anything else. It is worthwhile and I am making a difference to people's lives.
I am sorry you have such hatred towards me - a stranger. Can we please just stop this now?

Who was it that bailed the banks out?
Who is still cheating and bleeding this country dry while all the time avoiding taxes and getting big bonuses?
I completely agree with you that there is a lot of waste in the Public sector. I also am glad that many of the quangos have been abolished - far too many of them.
But this personal vendetta against me - as if i am to blame for all the country's ills is pointless. I work hard. I do a worthwhile job - it is not particularly easy but I love it.
I know you won't believe me but I am trying very hard to be conciliatory - so why not be the same?

There are many bad public sector workers, and there are many good public sector workers. Some of the good public sector workers will move heaven and earth to do great things. Sometimes you will rely on public sector workers to keep you safe, to protect you, to rescue you, or to save your life. Without these dedicated people, all of our lives would be very different. One day, you may need the services provided by demoness....

In fact, in our society, I don't think there are that many bad people at all in any sphere.
The overwhelming majority of people just get on with their lives in a civilised manner and do their jobs reasonably well.

I suppose you could argue that as Lloyds TSB, RBS, Northern Rock are in public ownership then their insane trading positions were the result of public sector workers.
But... just as big a burn up of public money is attributable to tax avoidance, both by individuals and by companies, but you don't seem to have a go at them when they squeal about their tax avoidance schemes being ripped apart. Or when they hold you to ransom over energy prices.
Blame public sector workers if you want (or as seems popular on here, the previous government), but its not them that are trousering your (and my) hard earned money.

My main problem with Tigeran is that he tars every single PS worker with the same brush and without knowing one thing about me, has made some pretty nasty and personal accusations.
I do think that in this climate we should be grateful for having a job and a pension but blaming the PS for all the economy's ills is just not on.
Particularly in light of all of the tax fiddles from very rich folk an d the banking scandals.
Billions of tax payers money went into bailing the banks out.
And yet Tigeran has had nothing to say about that.
