CHESHAM has been picked by a major internet provider for a new superfast broadband and wifi scheme that will make it ‘the best connected town in the UK’.

Virgin Media last night announced a major project to improve internet connections in the town, with the aim of helping residents and businesses.

The news was announced at the launch of the second annual Chesham Retail and Hospitality awards at the George and Dragon pub last night.

Matt Rogerson, Virgin Media’s head of public affairs said: “Virgin Media has invested over £13 billion investment in a world class broadband network across the majority of UK towns and cities including a large part of Chesham.

“But having network in the ground is only one part of the story. We want to focus on how we can help businesses and households get the most out of that network, in and outside the home, to the benefit of the whole community.

“Over the next few months, Virgin Media hopes to work with local businesses, the local council, other public services and the people of Chesham on a range of initiatives to get the most out of superfast broadband. In doing so, we hope to make Chesham the best connected town in the UK and work with the community to get the best out of superfast broadband."

The town council has been actively involved in the project and is working with Virgin Media on a broad range of plans.

So from what I can see from the article, there is no planned change to the infrastructure, just a load of blah blah blah.
Now if they were extending their reach, or adoptiong some new technology that is going to change the face of Chesham, fair enough, but this appears to be a PR stunt.

We (Better Chesham) have been involved in this project for some months. We believe there is a genuine attempt by Virgin to develop innovation in the way Broadband and Metro Wi-Fi is used to help business and the community get the best from the technology. As they say the bit in the ground is one thing but few people or businesses are really getting the benefits because they simply don't know what is available to them. We are hoping that the pilot in Chesham will help to develop new ways of using broadband and wi-fi that can be rolled out across the country and that it will focus attention of some of the great businesses we have in the town. We are up for the challenge - it's the kind of town we are.
