Marlow schools celebrate A-Level success

MARLOW'S two secondary schools were celebrating another year of outstanding A-Level results yesterday.

Great Marlow School in Bobmore Lane has improved for a seventh consecutive year, headteacher Geralyn Wilson said.

Dr Peter Holding, headteacher at Sir William Borlase's Grammar School, was also delighted with more excellent results, hot on the heels of an outstanding grade from an OFSTED inspection.

96 per cent of Great Marlow School students passed, with over 65 per cent getting A*-C grades, better by 11 per cent than last year. Over 40 per cent of all grades awarded were A*-B grades- an improvement of 19 per cent from 2011.

Mrs Geralyn Wilson said:“This is an absolutely superb set of results and clearly represents the tremendous effort and commitment put in by our students and staff over these past two years.”

Great Marlow pupil Andrew Piggin, 18, of Briars Close, High Wycombe, is going to Birmingham University to study law and French after getting two As and two Bs.

“At first I was quite disappointed,” he said.

“I needed 3As for my offer but then I got an email saying I was in so I was relieved and happy and can't wait to start now.”

His mother Sarah Piggin, 46, a receptionist, said: “I'm very happy, his results are superb. We've rung his dad and grandparents and they are jumping through hoops.”

Charlotte Edwards-Gayle, 18, from Lane End, is going to King's College after two As and two Bs, and said: “I'm really pleased, it's nice to know I got in and I'm glad it's over.”

42 students at Borlase's got straight A grades, while 77 per cent got A*to B grades.

94 per cent got A*-C and 100 per cent passed. The results are virtually on a par with last year.

Dr Holding said: “These are a fabulous set of results and we're very proud of them. I think the students should be extremely pleased, they've worked very hard and it's a fitting result for them.”

Kathryn Walker was a stand out performer, getting five A*s.

Amber De Vere, 18, is off to Oxford after getting two A*s and two As. She said: “It's really been four years to get here with GCSEs as well so I'm relieved and pleased to get the results I wanted.”

Borlase's student Peter Turnbull, 18, got four A*s and said he is delighted to be going to Imperial College to study maths and computer science, while Lewis Bridgeman, 18, who got three A*s and an A was excited to be heading to Surrey University for electronic engineering.
