The Britannia's future as a pub secured by takeover
THE Britannia will remain a place to buy a pint of lager and a packet of crisps after a buy out was confirmed.
The pub in Little Marlow Road has been up for sale for months.
McMullen and Sons have bought the property and have now submitted plans which will ensure it remains a pub.
It was listed by property agents as being of interest to housing operators and retailers.
Another pub further down Little Marlow Road, The Plough, looks set to be demolished and made into flats, after it closed recently.
McMullen and Sons, which owns various pubs across the UK, has taken possession of The Britannia in the last few days and said its future is secure as a pub.
Managing Director Peter Furness-Smith told the Free Press it plans to refurbish the building.
He said: "We are keen to get the work started and hopeful we will be able to open in November but such a tight time table will also require the support of the planning department."
Virge Balthazard, the area manager, said: "We will shortly start recruiting our team and we will be looking for around 30 enthusiastic and friendly people to fill both front of house service jobs, chefs and kitchen team members."
The skeleton of the building will remain the same, without any major changes. However, the proposals include creating a new external terrace with canopies and car park extensions.
The restaurant, kitchen and ground floor bar will remain where they are but the toilets will be relocated to the first floor.

The only thing that stopped me going there regularly was the disgusting state of the gents toilets. When I complained, I was asked to leave (never to return). I wonder why they couldn't make that pub work?
