Alex Collingwood criticises regional hospital plan

Council leader criticises regional hospital plan Council leader criticises regional hospital plan

ONE person to speak out against proposals for a new Thames Valley regional hospital last night was Wycombe District Council leader Alex Collingwood.

The Marlow ward member was almost a lone voice among the 80-strong audience at Great Marlow School as he questioned Dr Phillip Lee over radical plans for a ‘super hospital’ at Junction 8/9 of the M4 motorway.

Cllr Collingwood, a Conservative, said the M4 motorway suffers from constant closures, which would often make it difficult for patients to get to.

He added: “Also, who pays for it? How has the treasury reacted to your proposals? The person you have to convince is George Osborne."

He also questioned whether the local infrastructure would cope, saying “our roads are full”, adding “a better proposal would be to redo it in Wycombe”.

Dr Lee, Conservative MP for Bracknell, countered: “First of all show me a location that doesn’t have traffic problems around here...Wherever you choose there’s going to be traffic problems.”

He said it was crucial to have the hospital on a bypass or motorway as there would be more traffic lanes, providing better access than current hospital sites.

He pointed out the whole concept behind the new hospital is based around it serving a population of 750,000 people, which Wycombe does not have.

He added: “Of course I’d love it to be in downtown Bracknell....but if you’re trying to appeal to 750,000, by definition it’s got to be ‘not close’ to 650,000 of them.”

Much of the funding would come from the complete closure and sale of hospital sites such as Wexham Park and Heatherwood, along with parts of other sites such as Wycombe and Upton hospitals.

Dr Lee added the funding required for the project, estimated at around £750 million, was tiny compared to the £2 billion spent every week on the NHS.

The plans received a generally positive reaction from audience members.

Wycombe MP Steve Baker said he would support the project if it is backed by Bucks doctors in the Chiltern Clinical Commissioning Group [CCG].

Dr Annet Gamell, of Chiltern CCG, told the meeting she had concerns about the impact on Stoke Mandeville and Amersham hospitals, and questioned what would happen to the PFI contracts that still have many years to run.

But she added: “I’d like to say how much we welcome the proposal and the debate and discussion... [we] haven’t made our minds up either way.”

More from the meeting next week.

.
He can't make his own mind up on how this will affect his constituents. He would rather hide behind the skirts of CCG, many of whom have their own agendas. Pitiful.
.
Why bother having an MP at all?

What about the views of the public and patients in Buckinghamshire who use both hospitals?

Its not just about Wycombe!

The hospitals at Wycombe, Amersham and Stoke mandeville serve the population of the whole county (and beyond). The Trust neeeds to be considered as one hospital on three sites.

No decision can be made about Wycombe without considering the effects on Amersham and SMH.

That has been flagged up by Chiltern CCG, but for many doctors it will come down to what is most convenient for them, not the patients, as it is the doctors that ply their trade over several sites.

Rightly we would all like to see a state of the art super hospital built in the High Wycombe District, but Wycombe District does not have a 40 acre site near the M40 motorway or Marlow Bypass to build it on.

Clearly Councillor Alex Collingwood is playing to the residents of Wycombe District with a view to the next election by stating that, build it in High Wycombe. When the PCT and Bucks NHS conducted a so call consultation they totally rejected the idea of a new hospital solely on the grounds of cost.
I would ask of Councillor Alex Collingwood “What have you done about getting a new hospital built in High Wycombe District?” I am of the opinion that you have not even thought about it. You have only made a totally spurious statement that the M4 motorway suffers from CONSTANT closures, where is your proof that this is indeed a fact? Just look at the “constant gridlock” that occurs in High Wycombe, much worse than any of the delays on the M4 Junction 8/9.

Councillor Collingwood sadly did not engage his brain before he spoke, seems as if he needs treatment for severe hearing loss and a sight test as he appears to be going blind as well. I suspect that he does not understand the “HUB” principle that Dr Phillip Lee detailed in his address, seems like the Marlow and High Wycombe audience understood and absorbed the proposal better than he did, or is he suffering from selective hearing loss as well. I am also of the opinion that he has not even read Dr Phillip Lees proposal.

Of course it is difficult and there are many aspects of the proposal which will need sorting out but, whilst we have a narrow minded Councillor like Alex Collingwood there will be more aspects to sort out than is necessary. Fortunately he is not speaking for the residents of High Wycombe District.

Alas Steve Baker MP for High Wycombe is clearly sitting on the fence and is not capable of engaging his brain to enable him to make his own mind up, come on Steve Baker get behind the project and stop worrying about the Chiltern CCG, you know that they MUST back this proposal as it is the best result for their patients and for Bucks, Berks and Oxon, they KNOW that there is to be more movement of services from High Wycombe to Stoke Mandeville and subsequently to the John Radcliffe at Oxford.

To the people of High Wycombe District I say BACK THIS PROPOSAL and get a super hospital for us all, it can and it must happen for the benefit not just for High Wycombe District, but the all the residents OUTSIDE the borders of South Buckinghamshire.

You are right. Cllr Collingwood is as usual talking rubbish. We should support a new super hospital close to HW and Marlow.

There is no way Wycombe hospital will be expanded and as you suggests, he has the next election in mind. Don't worry, he wont be Leader of the Council at the time of the next election. I hear from my sources that a vote of confidence in his leadership is imminent.

Shutting down or reducing some of the ageing hospital facilities is desperately needed. Building a new one will definitely cost, but what more will it cost to patch together the ageing facilities vs. better using the monies and building a new site?

When will the current residents of this country look more than 5 years down the road?

Alex Collongwood looks like the Grandad from the Munsters and talks as much sense as him. Where does the money come from he asks, Der, the taxpayer. The NHS is funded by us the tax payer through NI contributions. The traffic issue, every one knows that trying to get in and out of Wycombe is a nightmare most of the time. It is in a valley with all roads going down into the valley and back out again. As for redeveloping Wycombe hospital, the site is too small. Please go back to Marlow bottom with the rest of the Munsters, stay there and be quiet.

Sorry it but does have a a large area next to the M40 - The Handy Cross Sports Center - they are about to knock it down and shift most of the facilities all over the place so why not. after all it will only get in the way of a few unwanted offices.
