Sacked Minister, The Amersham and Chesham MP Cheryl Gillan, unleashes broadside on High Speed 2

Sacked Minister unleashes broadside on High Speed 2 Sacked Minister unleashes broadside on High Speed 2

DAYS after being sacked as a Government Minister Cheryl Gillan has unleashed a biting broadside against High Speed 2 and attacked her party's support for the project.

The Amersham and Chesham MP, Conservative, said now she has been 'liberated' from the shackles of collective responsibility as part of the Government's top table she will speak her mind.

She said the £33bn scheme, which would cut through Buckinghamshire's countryside heartland, should be binned.

In a piece for the Telegraph today, she writes about the impact on her constituents.

She wrote: “The project is already causing mayhem in our local property market. Many who live within a mile of the proposed route are already struggling to sell their homes. And despite promises from ministers, those who face having the value of their homes decimated are simply not being adequately compensated at the moment.

“And the benefits? The Department of Transport has so far failed to produce a credible business case for the project. So obsessed are HS2’s architects with cutting a few minutes off journeys between London and Birmingham, they plan no stops between these cities.

“This means the communities along the line suffer noise and pollution, but do not share the economic benefits.”

In a dig at her party, she said: “I have always been and remain a loyal Conservative. But this project should not be on the Government’s agenda if Conservative principles are at the fore.”

Mrs Gillan revealed she has written to Patrick McLoughlin, the new Transport Secretary.

She wrote: “If this project is forced through, it is vital that our beautiful environment is protected in the Chilterns and people are compensated for this blight on their lives, homes and businesses.

“When I look at the public finances, I wonder how such an expensive project with such a weak business case can survive.

“I urge the new Transport Secretary to recognise HS2 is not a project to be put on hold – it’s one for the dustbin.”

As the current MP you showed no support whatsoever to your constiuents in selling your home. Now you have other people whose homes they can not sell. By being sacked it is clear that the government are intent on going ahead with this scheme. I suspect that as it was first mooted by the then Labour government it was indeed political. The coalition will dither with this and in 2015 (hopefull a lot bloody sooner) when they are out of office and it proceeds they will sit back and say it wasn't us.

This sounds very much like Cheryl Gillan admitting that she put her ministerial duties before the needs of her constituents. I know who won't be getting my vote at the next election.

The whole country shares the benefits of better rail infrastructure and freed up existing lines (ie the Chiltern and WCML will have less long distance trains and more space for commuter and freight trains).

Your constituents thus get more commuter trains (although I agree that those on the WCML do get even more) and can join fast trains to the continent or Scotland by just joining HS2 at its nearest station.

It would not be high speed if it stopped everywhere. Think of its stations like airports or motorway junctions. They are rare and you do need to travel a bit to reach them.

And there IS a credible business case.

35 minutes is a large saving in journey time (and it will be more than that for trains like Eurostar from Birmingham International to Paris).

Trains will not stop at each end. They will continue to Manchester and Glasgow and some will run on to Europe - so the time savings are for rather more than just London-Brum.

With phase 2 we will be looking at an hour off London-Manchester or to Scotland or Sheffield or Leeds (and probably Newcastle).

What silly tosh!

If all those people in the Chilterns even slightly believe this woman has had a change of heart they haven't got a tiny hope in stopping HS2.

This sort of reporting is a big win for the YES to HS2 campaign.
