Axe still looming over Marlow Museum

THE axe is still looming over Marlow Museum despite a few donors responding to pleas for a desperately needed cash injection.

The history centre in Pound Lane could shut next year if £16,000 can not be found, as revealed in the Marlow Free Press last month.

Volunteers have renewed their appeal to businesses to dig in their pockets to ensure the museum itself is not confined to being a thing of the past.

It was opened just three years ago following about two decades of campaigning.

Since our front page story on August 31, acting museum chairman Mike Hyde has received several calls.

He said: "A number of kind residents have made donations and it is hoped others will follow on. However it is the larger sums we need from businesses and shops who benefit from being based in this marvellous part of the Thames Valley or employ local staff."

Council grants have helped but the museum is still a long way short of its target.

Mr Hyde said: "We will be knocking on office doors increasingly as our small band of volunteers find time in their busy schedules but your readers should not hold back and await the call as we would be happy to hear from them sooner rather then later."

The museum remains open currently, from 1pm to 5pm on weekends for the rest of September.

Royalty and Marlow is the current display.
