Nags Head keeps licence but music must be regulated

The Nags Head The Nags Head

THE Nags Head will keep its licence and be able to stage live music but has been warned that if there is a further review future activities could be stopped at the pub.

Last week there was a Licensing Panel Hearing at Wycombe District Council chambers to review The Nags Head licence after noise nuisance complaints.

The panel heard residents has complained on a number of occasions since April about the level of noise coming from the pub in London Road, after former tenants Maria Paesano and Marco Iorio took over.

Admiral Taverns, who have put the pub up for sale, have since removed the tenants.

It also heard there had been reports of alleged under age drinking and alleged drug taking on the premises, but these were unsubstantiated. (See below for related stories).

The decision notice has been released.

To prevent public nuisance a noise limiting device will be installed to control 'C' weighted low frequency noise and will be set at a level agreed by the Control of Pollution unit at Wycombe District Council.

There is also no entertainment to be held in the chill out area below the Blues Loft and a log will need to be made for regulated entertainment.

The panel want signs put up asking patrons to respect neighbours when leaving, no drinking outside the pub after 10pm and a direct line for local residents to report any noise concerns.

There are two conditions for the prevention of crime and disorder, which are to have no under 18 events taking place and no person under 18 is allowed at the pub after 10pm until the close of business.

The panel notice said: "The panel were concerned about the issues raised at the hearing in respect of noise nuisance and prevention of crime and disorder. They felt it appropriate to inform the Licence Holder that if any further Review is requested in respect of the premises, serious consideration would be given to the removal of permitted licensable activities from the licence and/ or reducing the permitted hours of regulated entertainment."

Admiral Taverns have the right to appeal. If they do not the conditions will come into place at the end of the appeal notice.

Seems reasonable on the surface - the Nags Head gets to live another day!

On the face of it good news but "a noise limiting device will be installed to control 'C' weighted low frequency noise and will be set at a level agreed by the Control of Pollution unit at Wycombe District Council" at what level will it be set?
Initial comments implied that it would be at a level below the usual traffic noise on the road outside or just general conversation levels in a pub which would prevent any music at all.

Interesting one this. As above I worry they could be almost setting the place up to fail.

If it is set too low then you will not create a good atmosphere within the place, if it is too high then you will get complaints - is there a happy medium for people or not?

The other issue is that whilst I fully accept people living nearby should not be disturbed at silly hours - I would hate to see people complaining about noise at 1am on a weekend because this could really be damaging for the place.

I hope to see it re-open soon as it looks a blooming mess when I cycle past it every day!

Before that stupid landlord got in there the place always seemed to be packed with a brilliant atmosphere - lets hope those days can return once more!

theres rumours that admiral taverns have sold the venue "to someone within the business " if this is another smaller brewery or individual no one knows. Although Admiral Have said "any" licence decision or changes will be appealed. The current news that the licence is going to be kept but with conditions This will still make running the venue a very hard thing to do and if admiral don't appeal my personal opinion is that this pub will become unprofitable or unviable. I AGREE ITS SETTING THE PLACE UP TO FAIL

If the music is as it was when Tom ran it then it wont be too bad. It's cos Marco had that bloody drum n bass crap blaring out probably with the doors open!

I wonder how many other pubs in the Wycombe area have these kind of constraints placed upon them!

I'm not being funny here, although i wish i could be...but what a lot of the council and members of the general public don't understand is that a lot of the noise complaints were actually a load of fake, given by certain locals who had a personal dislike to Marco/Maria. I have been a patron to the pub for many years and can honestly say that it is one of the best venues in High Wycombe. It would be such a shame if the pub had to issue 'low level music' as it's one of the only decent spots around where people, college students and up-coming artists, can be heard. VIVA LA RESISTANCE!

That is absolute bull. Marco completely ruined the place. The decor, the music, the bar, the fact that it was closed half the time...

So what is the noise limit? Most council imposed limits are lower other noise emitted in the near vicinity. As some of you say setting the place up to fail.
Could be the end of a Great Landmark!!!

This is terrible news, yet another distraction from the reading of Ivors blog.

Have you read Ivors blog today?

The fact that no one involved with the management of the Nags has made a coherent and consistent statement speaks volumes (via their facebook pages or the press). Has the Nags been sold, is it up for sale or are the Sweeney's running it, do they have a 40dB limit or a limiting device (set at what level?). No one in their right mind would buy the place to run as a music venue with the current licensing limitations, future reviews etc.

I bet planning permission will be filed for flats or offices before Christmas. The Hags under Tom's management was awesome but we can't keep living in the past.

Hate to say it, but it's time has past. An out of town music venue in a residential area with no parking is simply not viable :(
