Steve Baker accuses NHS of 'botching' launch of new hospital unit
12:10pm Thursday 4th October 2012 in News By Lawrence Dunhill
MP Steve Baker has accused health chiefs of “botching” the launch of a new GP unit at Wycombe Hospital by “spreading a wave of panic through the town”.
About 50,000 leaflets have been sent out to alert residents to the closure of the Emergency Medical Centre – meaning more emergency patients now face a trip to Stoke Mandeville.
The leaflets also publicise the opening of a new Minor Injuries and Illness Unit [MIIU] at the Queen Alexandra Road site, but Mr Baker says they have stirred up unnecessary emotions.
In his blog today, he said many people have interpreted the leaflets to mean the hospital is losing its A&E ward – which in fact already happened in 2005.
The Conservative MP for Wycombe wrote: “This cack-handed public awareness effort has caused yet another round of alarm and despondency – entirely unnecessarily – over an issue which was aired and settled earlier this year....It is a terrible own goal by the NHS.
“It is exasperating that these publicity materials were not phrased in a less incendiary way.
"Terms like A&E and Emergency Medical Centre are jargon that may mean different things to medical professionals but not the general public. Figuring that out is not rocket science."
He added the leaflets, produced by the NHS Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Cluster, have “reopened a wound and led people to believe they are losing something important, while in reality they haven’t had it for most of a decade”.
The controversial closure of the emergency room was agreed in May and implemented this week.
It means seriously ill or injured patients should go to Stoke Mandeville or Wexham Park hospitals - except for heart attack and stroke patients, who will still be treated at Wycombe.
The MIIU is for non-emergency patients with health problems which are unsuitable for a GP appointment, and which they cannot treat themselves.
It will be run by GPs and open overnight thanks to a successful campaign initiated by the Bucks Free Press.
The NHS Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Cluster, the counties’ primary care trust [PCT], said it “does not accept that it has botched the launch of the Minor Injuries and Illness Unit”.
A spokesman added: “Throughout the extensive engagement and consultation process the public repeatedly told the PCT that it wanted it to be open and transparent and to communicate clearly what this means for both the existing and the new services.
“This is what we have done. We would not want to do anything that would preserve or create an expectation that seriously ill or injured patients can be safely managed within the MIIU.”

I have a 3 year old and if something happens to him, where do I take him?
This is what we are all confused about.
Do I take the risk and drive him in the middle of the night to Wycombe Hospital or do I take him directly to Stoke Mandeville or John Radcliffe or Wexham????
I'm starting to get the impression that if I took him down to Wycombe and by the time that someone says sorry there is nothing that we can do with him here - pls take him to another hospital - that by the time that I then get back into the car and drive like a mad man to the nearered hospital which would be miles away - that my son will be in a lot of unnecessary pain and even has the risk of dying if it’s something serious.
This is England and the year is 2012.
We don’t live in the middle of the Austrian Bush or in a remote village somewhere in Central Africa.
Why in a town the size of High Wycombe do we not have this basic facility which "will be" life threatening?
The old Medical whatever it was called centre wasn’t that bad (depending on the time or day that you arrived there) - have you ever experienced waiting at Stoke Mandeville?? - they are terribly understaffed and the centre is not even going to be finished (ie the extension) till the Spring.
I would rather (if there was no traffic) risk the extra jorouny and go direct to John Radcliffe - which is even furher away from Wycombe - yet I personally live about a mile away from Wycombe (whats left of it) Hospital.
I don’t need Steve Baker blaming the Trust or the Trust giving us some clever PR spin - I just need a fully functional hospital that’s fit for purpose – “here” in High Wycombe - year 2012 - not 1412 where we get treated by leaches or have to fix ourselves up.... Come on someone get your act together and actually DO something rather than talk BS.

Oh well that's alright then Steve. I assume you have private health insurance along with most of your fellow Tories. What a bizarre story. Baker is criticisizing the NHS for poor publicity rather then poor care. Roll on the next election.

We do not live in a democray - we do not have any say to where our taxes end up going.
It's all dictated to us from those ever so clever politiians and adminstrators.
I want my tax to bring back our needed services to Wycombe Hosptial.
The Governement are nothing more than a bunch of not listening, uncaring and incompentant fools.

I was booked in, examined, x rayed and sent home within the hour - one of the most efficient services I have ever received from the hospital.
A few issues which will cause problems - clearly not enough doctors for the demand. Whilst I got seen to quickly on my return from Xray there were an awful lot of people waiting and had been for some time.
Also at the moment you still have to go across to the old building to have an X ray as the new unit does not yet have one, although I am informed this will change.
You can go to this place for most things you would have gone to the EMC for just not serious trauma, head injuries with loss of conciousness (sp?) and others.
I am a firm believer we need an A&E BUT this place is not as bad as I thought it was going to be...

I have no problem with anyone expressing their views, but when someone takes over the people's mouthpiece for his own political gain I strongly object.
.
Why not use a pseudonym like the rest of us Darren .. or is that beneath you?
.
If you are not trying to use these comments sections for you own gain then it won't matter, will it?

“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”. John Lydgate (and later President Lincoln)
Regardless of my own political aspirations, I have been fighting for Wycombe Hospital to have its services returned for a long time now (I believe since about 2003 when they were first taken away and Wycombe General Hospital was downgraded). I have even been on protests in Wycombe and even helping out in campaigns outside of the Wycombe area.
I am a proud father and my son was one of the last babes that were born in the Hospital before they took away the main maternity ward. I worry where to take him when he has an accident now that they have taken away the medical centre which of course before that was an A&E.
In fact this weekend I am going to travel and look at Wexham, Stoke Mandeville and even possibly John Radcliffe to see the quickest route to get to all hospitals, so if anything did happen – I would know where to drive him to (or my wife, or for myself).
I shall not apologise for posting here under my own name, I have my own views – even if you don’t agree with some of them.
I am used to criticism and I’m a big enough boy to take whatever *** comes my way and deal with it.
The only reason that I am political is that I care about what’s right and what’s wrong, I don’t care about party politics (hence the reason that I’ve resigned from the Conservative Party) – I enjoy fighting for what I believe is right.
So I shall continue to write what’s on my mind and in my own name, I shall not hide behind a pseudonym. I have no problem with others here that do decide to write anonymously, that is their choice.

I can see that you are still not happy with me - which I fully understand.
Sorry if I accused you of anything and I honestly didn’t know what your question was - I did try to go over the previous posts and I got lost.
I did go on to state that I retracted that the UK is any worse than any other Country on this issue.
Although there are bigots, racists and people that do not like foreigners living here - there are many more tolerant people (thankfully).
I also agreed with one of your other comments (which you may have missed)..!!
Can you forgive me?
