A BUCKS firefighter who was called out to a fatal crash on his first ever day shift has launched a road safety campaign.

Adam Burch, based at High Wycombe fire station, says the incident has stayed with him and prompted his efforts to get young drivers to be more sensible on the roads.

Fire chiefs gave the Bucks New University graduate the go-ahead to forge links with students on the same design course he had taken - to get them to produce the campaign material.

He has also persuaded AMF Bowling Alley in the Eden Centre, where he used to work as a manger, to display the advertising material around the venue.

Students on the creative advertising course have completed the project and the best work was recognised during a launch at the bowling alley on Tuesday night.

The winners were Sam Preece, 23 and Helen Rogerson, 22, whose posters ran the slogan ‘Don’t be driven to distraction’.

Adam is now planning to get their adverts in as many locations as possible around the county, including at Adams Park and the banners above Crendon Street.

Danny Whitelock, High Wycombe station commander, said he thinks the quality of the work will help reduce deaths and serious injuries on the roads of Bucks.

Tutor of the Advertising: Creative BA (Hons) course Phil Dearman said: "We are very proud to be working on something that hopefully has a very good outcome for the community... It’s one of the briefs the students enjoy the most."

Well done young man and I sincerely hope your efforts will influence a few young drivers who would otherwise have ended up seriously hurt, or worse.
