New police scheme aims to deter shoplifters New police scheme aims to deter shoplifters

POLICE in Princes Risborough are hoping a new scheme will stop shoplifters prospering in the town.

In his monthly newsletter Sgt Andrew Deane, who is based in the town, said the shops in the town centre have been suffering from a number of thefts.

He said the criminals appear to be travelling to and from the area- some as far away as Essex and parts of London.

To tackle this problem officers have launched a refreshed shop watch scheme, which will improve communications between shops if shop workers notice anything suspicious. It aims to gather more intelligence about criminals targeting the area.

Various organisations will work together including the police, the Neighbourhood Action Group, the town council, the Risborough Area Business Group and the shops.

Stephen Barnes, from Art and Office in the High Street, said they had a spate of thefts in the summer.

He said about the shop watch: "I think it is excellent. I think it can't do anything but help. It is encouraging. There is a good atmosphere of everyone working together to beat crime, which is the way to do it."

Anton Hazelle, who runs a chocolaterie and cafe, said he thinks it is a good idea, providing it works. He said he does not have a huge problem with theft as there is little on display outside the counter area.

But added: "I think it is a fantastic idea as long as it works. Every one has to be in it for it to work and hopefully it will."

Some of the charity shops in the town have been targeted regularly by shoplifters.

Adrian Rolfe, who is a town councillor and also works at Marks and Spencers as a section manager, said: "I think it is very good and very beneficial for the town. Hopefully it will be sending out a message to shoplifters coming into the area that we mean business.

"All the local shops will be working together. Hopefully we will be able to react quickly to shoplifters coming in."

He said he thinks it is a step in the right direction.
