A MAJOR road used by many motorists going to and from south Bucks is set to benefit as part of a £170m roads investment.

The Government have announced various projects are to get cash in an attempt to tackle congestion and boost the economy – including the A404 Bisham roundabout.

A £4.2m plan has been unveiled to convert it to signalised crossroads, starting in 2014.

The scheme, anticipated by Department for Transport officials to create 6,800 jobs and 2,403 new homes by 2020, has been backed by Maidenhead MP Theresa May.

Mrs May, who represents Cookham and Bisham, on the Bucks border, said: “This is very welcome news and will help to tackle congestion on the A404 at Bisham, which is a constant source of frustration to local residents. The Government is right to invest in infrastructure and to support our vital transport links.”

The improvement works would be complete by 2015.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “Keeping traffic moving is vital to securing prosperity. By removing bottlenecks and improving access to local enterprise zones, key international trading ports and communities, these road schemes will help get people to and from work and power the economy.”
