Planners give green light for pub to be demolished for new homes

The days of drinking beer at the Plough look set to be numbered The days of drinking beer at the Plough look set to be numbered

A CONTROVERSIAL plan to demolish a pub and turn it into six flats should be approved, planning officials say.

Over 200 residents signed a petition against the proposals for the Plough in Little Marlow Road, Marlow.

Yet, the scheme for the failed pub has been recommended to get the green light by officers at Wycombe District Council.

The development will be put into the public spotlight on Wednesday night when councillors meet to make a decision.

Members of the Green Verges Neighbourhood Watch Group have been campaigning against, saying that it will lead to traffic and parking chaos on an already blighted junction.

An initial plan from developers for seven flats was withdrawn after objections.

But The Plough Marlow Ltd has insisted it has worked hard to address all of the key concerns and will be an improvement on the now closed pub.

The owners said it was no longer viable as a pub due to high costs, strong competition and had also suffered from problems with anti-social behaviour.

I am not in favour of pulling down buildings to build unnecessary houses however in this case it happens to be a pub that is being demolished which kind of makes the scheme a little more palatable....

Isn't 'kind of' a bit modern (or 'new-fangled') and transatlantic for Wycombe's trusty Blogger of Doom?

It's actually a bit worse than usual.)

Do these planners realise what they are doing to the local communities by continually allowing pubs to be pulled down to make way for housing. As with the Live and Let Live on Booker Common, it was the hub of the community, now there is only the village hall which is still trying to keep the community together.

Not enough time was given in this case to try to sell it as a public house, the owner of the land made no effort to sell it to prospective landlords, he wanted planning permission so he could make more money from the sale, which you cannot blaim him for, but the planning department ignored local people's objections and they also ignored a covenant on it that it should be kept as a public house. But, no time was wasted in giving planning permission.

Do the planners give any consideration to keeping the local communities together, or are they only interested in keeping the developers happy?

Whilst the Live and Let Live may well have been the hub of the Booker community, be assured that the Plough didn't command the same lofty position in Marlow. Far from it. It closed because no one drank there, preferring the numerous other establishments in Marlow. I am not sad to see it go.
