Toys R Us to 'pop-up' as Hobbycraft plans store for Wycombe

TOYS R Us has revealed its Eden store will be a 'pop-up' shop, as Hobbycraft prepares to open a new store in High Wycombe.

The toys giant will unveil one of its first ever seasonal stores in the former Pumpkin Patch unit in the shopping centre next Friday.

But Toys R Us has not ruled out staying in the town full-time, providing the pop-up store performs well during the festive period.

The company’s Justine Pryce told the BFP: “We are open for the Christmas season and then we will review it.

“I don’t know [what the likelihood of staying is]. Conversations are happening but until we see the success it brings it is hard to say.”

Meanwhile, arts and crafts specialists Hobbycraft will launch on the Wycombe Marsh Retail Park on Wednesday, November 28.

This will be followed by a celebration on the Saturday, with competitions, giveaways and product demonstrations.

Hobbycraft’s new home is in between Comet and Pets At Home.

And Tesco has submitted an early application to Wycombe District Council for the former Platts garage next to Costcutter in London Road.

Poor Costcutter in London Road. If its anything like our business in Flackwell we have now lost 40% of business since Sainsbury local opened.
I wish them luck.

I thought it was a permanent commitment to open a store in our town but now it turns out to be just a 'pop-up' shop.
~
We should be told the date when the 'pop-up' shop will be 'popping-down' as it would be most disappointing to buy from the store then find out they have closed after Christmas if the item needs to be returned.

Do read the 2nd., 3rd., and 4th. sentences, there's a good chap. If they're going to see how the store behaves through Christmas, then decide about its future, they can hardly announce, beforehand, its closure date. Your entire demeanour, on this site, seems to be to view a glass as half-empty, never half-full, simply so that you can envisage more doom and gloom for this town.

A few weeks ago the Comet bunched up closer to KFC and added a mezzanine floor and there is now a decent sized gap between there and the Pet store

I expect that the Christmas trade at Toys R Us will be good but I fail to see how some good sales at Christmas time would be any indication of how the toy trade will go for the rest of the year. I think they are just postulating and I expect they will not be around Wycombe after January.

Agree in general, but Christmas sales do keep smaller shops open all year round. Save the Children on the High Street is kept afloat the rest of the year through annual Christmas card sales.

Hobbycraft (overpriced as it is) will be a nice diverse addition to the retail park, although with this proposed Tesco congestion will be even more horrific. Something surely must be done about the traffic there!

Also I don't see how Tesco can make a case for being there. There are 3 Costcutters and numerous 'cornershops' within a few minutes walking distance. There is a Tesco at the top of Amersham hill too.
