Cadets parade their colours for Trafalgar Day

SCORES of cadets and servicemen paraded along the streets of High Wycombe on Sunday to mark Trafalgar Day.

The Wycombe Unit of the Sea Cadet Corps hosted the 36-strong cadet guard for the Bucks and Oxon parade - a celebration of Admiral Lord Nelson’s victory over the French and Spanish fleets at Cape Trafalgar on October 21, 1805.

The event, which units from the two counties take turns to host, saw the units parading their colours along the High Street to All Saints Parish Church for a service before marching back the other way past the crowd.

The parade was preceded by an inspection of the cadets by a team led by Commander Andrew Stacey of the Royal Navy, who is the Chief of Staff to the UK Representative for Afghanistan & Pakistan in the Foreign Office and former Captain of HMS Iron Duke.

High Wycombe Mayor Cllr Chaudrey Shafique was also part of the inspection. He said: "It was a wonderful experience to be part of such a special occasion.

"The service at All Saints was excellent and to see everyone out in the High Street enjoying themselves was lovely, there was a great public spirit."

Chairman of Wycombe District Council, Councillor Wendy Mallen, added: "They were all very smart, it was a very impressive and enjoyable occasion.

"I heard a story of how one of the men had jumped on a train as he fekt he needed to be here as his father had served in the armed forces, it was such a good day and it's just a pity that we can't have the parade here more often."
