A three-strong team of explorers, tackling sub-zero temperatures in the Catlin Arctic Survey, have stumbled across evidence of a nearby Arctic fox.
Pen Hadow, Martin Hartley and Ann Daniels found polar bear tracks last month and have described knowing they are not alone as both comforting and unnerving.
Urine spots blew the fox’s cover, as the ice was too hard for it to leave indentations like the polar bears had.
Mr Hadow, particularly charmed by the Arctic fox, said: “What other mammal that’s not a marine mammal could survive up to 600m offshore, on a frozen ocean but our little friend the Arctic Fox.”
Arctic Foxes are the same size as large cats and feed on seal pups or prey left over by polar bears.
