Sunday roast feels the heat

THE traditional Sunday roast could soon become a thing of the past, as people in High Wycombe would rather dial the number for an Indian takeaway than slave over a hot stove for lunch.

The results of a new survey showed the nation's favourite Sunday night takeaway was pizza, but in High Wycombe people were two and a half times more likely than the national average to call the Yellow Pages for Indian cuisine phone numbers.

Amin, a waiter at Little India, Hazlemere Cross Roads, Hazlemere, explained that the restaurant did a good trade on Sundays, but thought there were busier nights. He said: "I do not really know why, but Sunday evening is normally very popular, especially around 7, 7.30pm. We do better with takeaway than we do in the restaurant. But Friday and Saturday are still our best nights of the week, without a doubt."

And Amin thought there were so many good quality Indian restaurants in the area, that curries were bound to be the most popular takeaway. He said: "I'm not surprised, to be honest. We have been in this trade for some time, and we have seen some very good places open up around here. If you look at Hazlemere, Loudwater, High Wycombe, Amersham or Beaconsfield, there are some very good ones around."

The findings have been compiled by Yellow Pages 118 247, which measured the number of people contacting its call centres for takeaway information. Calls peaked on a Sunday, as people chose to order food in, rather than get cooking.

Jason Smith, head of Yellow Pages 118 24 7, said: "We're a nation of food lovers, so it's fascinating to see the diversity of choice available as an alternative to the traditional Sunday roast."
