Bucks to remain "in freezer" with Boxing Day blizzard possible

Amersham in the snow, taken Friday by a reader Amersham in the snow, taken Friday by a reader

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE will be “in the freezer all the way to Christmas Day” with a possible Boxing Day blizzard also looming, a forecaster warned this morning.

As the county shivers in the extreme cold the ground temperature in Amersham is minus 12 degrees Celsius, according to Hazlemere-based British Weather Services.

Any hopes the snow will melt this week look bleak, although most days are likely to be dry in the main.

Forecaster Jim Dale, from BWS, said: “Down in the Amersham area this morning a lot of ground area is getting to minus 12.

"It will be the same tonight, maybe even more.

“We are in the freezer all the way to Christmas day.

“These next few days I expect to be mainly dry. There's a threat we need to be watching on Thursday time but it will probably remain to the east to us, but we need to watch short term developments.”

The Met Office has predicted Wednesday snow showers, but Mr Dale believes it is likely Bucks will escape as it hits eastern areas.

He said: “There is a front out west which will try to move in later on Christmas Day and Boxing Day which might produce blizzards before we get into anything which is in any way shape or form milder.

“I think it will be a white Christmas in terms of what is on the ground but possibly not in terms of seeing a flake on the day.

“But these things can change and we need to be careful.”

The Met office has said there may be small flurries of snow today.

Beyond Christmas, Mr Dale expects a “messy mix” of snow and rain going into the New Year.

Gritting teams were out doing secondary routes in south Bucks and restocking salt bins and heaps about 9am, according to Transport for Buckinghamshire's twitter updates.

Downley is a nightmare! Thankfully I live on the lower slopes of Downley and managed to get out from the lower part of Plomer Hill. The Pastures and Plomer Hill itself are pretty much "no go" unless you're in a 4 x 4! The top part of Middlebrook Road is very bad ... no idea what Hughenden Avenue is like. Have to say that once you get out onto the main roads, things aren't too bad and the traffic is moving although you need to take extra caution everywhere. Most drivers seem to be going at sensible speeds and keeping a good distance. Unfortunately, I have had to go to work today but if you don't have to go out, then please don't!!!!!!

It was snowing lightly about half an hour ago. Met office has changed and no longer says snow, although we are still on high alert for snow in their weather warnings. Accuweather says snow later today for us as well!

Hughenden road is horrible. Only attempt in a 4x4. Got out in ours but only because others hadn't tried (phew!). We all saw what happened there the last 2 winters with cars smashed up there so this year, just don't try! Keep safe and warm... it's bitterly cold :(

Hughenden Road was OK yesterday. I will be attempting it in an hour so will update if I make it back! Met office says snow from 3pm til 6pm now.

The incoming snow cloud keeps changing. It is heading our way for about 6pm tonight and yesterday it was predicted to be quite big reaching up as far as Herts. Todays outlook has it looking a little thinnner and possibly only scraping Wycombe.

So really we just have to wait and see. If it does catch us it may be 4-5 hours of heavy snow.

I have just come from Great Missenden to Loudwater, Cryer Hill is passable with caution, all roads through wycombe are slushy but okay, traffic was very built up but everyone driving slowly and cautiously.

Thank you for that update - don't have to go anywhere today but tomorrow need to venture out. I think as long as no more snow comes we will be OK.
Hope you get home safely.

Wycombe council will be "in the doghouse" until the spring, unless they start improving conditions in the worst hit areas.

Spoke to Met office - they expect the snow to mainly pass us by, maybe some light snow but that's it. We'll still have ice to contend with but at least we won't have a load of additional snow (although I do like the snow!!). Drive home safely people, I'm heading off a little early to ensure a safe arrival :)

it was -11 this morning in Sands this morning but the roads have been passable. I work in Holmer Green and some of the roads are impossible! Just waiting to see if we're in for another few inches tonight, so far its just been a little dusting.

January last year I was in Chippenham Wiltshire and round the back roads of my mothers house the council were gritting all the paths and roads. It is now 8pm on Monday 20th Dec. and my father has just rung me to tell me the snow ploughs have gone past his house twice this evening and he lives in the smallest back road in the village of Mitcheldean,Gloucest
ershire. I live in one of the biggest cul-de-sacs in Europe which is the Gunthorpe Road Estate of Wiltshire Road in Marlow. And the main road out has 3inches of tightly packed snow!! I hope that nobody needs an ambulance or fire engine Mr Wycombe District Council!!

In Gwynedd they used to do a similar thing, they used to make sure all paths were gritted, roads were always gritted before the bad weather hit, even the country lanes and they never ran short of grit. And to top it off the council tax was half what they charge in this dump.

Fine snow has been consistently falling in Holmer Green for the last hour. Roads now have a new thin white layer on them. I suspect Sawpit Hill, Holmer Green Road, and the A404 at Hazlemere Golf Course will soon be affected. They were passable but slow at 6pm.

Bucks free press could you please tell me the reason why the gritter have been parked in the depot for the entire of the night and all this morning?? I thought that when temperatures fall was the time you was supposed to do this.
And when I mean grit I mean proper grit not 90 % sand 10 % grit it does not work hence why the roads are not being cleared with that rubbish.
All stop paying council tax buy the grit ourselves and I am sure we could al work together and do one hell of a good job.

Agree, i think their performance has been very poor so far this year, to me, they are not doing their job properley.

I saw a few gritters last night. Plomer Hill, West Wycombe Road and New Road were all good. But still cars are scattered - they really should get tickets now or be towed as there is no excuse apart from laziness.
