Keep those wagons rolling
Wacky contest: Reporters Ann-Marie Canavan and Lucy Clapham try out Wagon Wheel racing
Wacky contest: Reporters Ann-Marie Canavan and Lucy Clapham try out Wagon Wheel racing

BISCUIT fans will get the chance to compete in the world's first-ever wagon wheel rolling competition on May 26.

The wacky competition is being held to celebrate the tea break favourite's 60th anniversary as one of the country's most loved biscuits.

The event will see competitors in the Wagon Wheel Rolling Championship pitch their accuracy, skill and nerve against one another to see who will be crowned the first-ever World Wagon Wheel Rolling Champion.

Those taking part at the Black Horse pub in Windmill Road, Fulmer, will be asked to roll the large round chocolate and marshmallow biscuits down a custom made Wagon Wheel rolling pitch so that they settle in one of five scoring zones.

The player with the highest score over three rolls will be crowned the winner.

They will not only get the accolade of being known as the world's first champion in the competition, but will also receive £150 worth of Red Letter Days vouchers to spend on a unique experience of their choice.

TV personality Keith Chegwin will host the day's events, which is in aid of a number of charities, including the Eyeless Trust which helps children who have sight problems.

The tournament will also raise funds for Oxford's Radcliffe Hospitals' charitable funds.

Brendan Keane, landlord of the Black Horse, said he is happy to be playing host to the wacky event and has himself in the past enjoyed the odd Wagon Wheel.

He said: "We have had a lot of interest and all the school mums are getting quite excited about getting the chance to meet Keith Chegwin.

"We are hoping this will be a real family event and help raise money for charity. We are hoping to see around 1,000 people show up. I have been known to eat the odd one in the past but they are a lot smaller than what I remember."

Burton's Foods, which bakes Wagon Wheels, is happy to be celebrating the 60th anniversary.

Jeremy Dunn, senior brand manager for Wagon Wheels, said: "The main aim of the competition is to kick off the 60th anniversary celebrations.

"We wanted to do something quirky and interesting and have put a lot of time and effort into this. It should be a great event. Sixty years is a real achievement and the Wagon Wheel is a great retro brand and has always been a popular bigger biscuit choice."
