Partying with Dr Who and daleks
Street party: Jessica and Georgia Neale at the event
Street party: Jessica and Georgia Neale at the event

K9, daleks and timelords descended on a quiet High Wycombe street last week as residents went Doctor Who crazy.

Every year, for one day only, the private street of Upper Stanley Road is closed off to cars while fun-seeking residents hold a street party.

This year the theme was the British science fiction television hit Doctor Who, and residents got out their sonic screwdrivers, polished their Tardis and enjoyed themselves.

In true street tradition, the celebrations began with a wheelie bin competition in which seven households had creatively dressed up and accessorised their rubbish bin as a Doctor Who character.

The winning entry was a silver K9 created by Diane and Mark Champion and the couple were presented with the traditional wheelie bin-shaped shield as their prize.

Jenny Rooake and Sue Neale, the key organisers of the day, ensured there was plenty to do for the participants. There were various activities throughout the day all in relation to the Doctor Who theme.

These included a general knowledge quiz, a monster mask competition, volleyball, table tennis and a poetry competition.

The men provided a barbecue for the evening and five girls aged ten to 13 performed a dance to the famous theme tune of Doctor Who.

Rose and Jessica Neale also ran an apple bobbing and pea picking stall. Jessica, who was friends with 11-year-old John Hampden School pupil Harry Mills, who recently died of meningitis, donated the £12 raised to the Meningitis Foundation.

The fun party, for residents and their close family, has been described by Sue Neale as an occasion where "everyone comes together, from all walks of life, like one big happy team of people."
