Successful business ventures by pupils

SCHOOLS and colleges have been celebrating after the area's finest young business minds were awarded for their commercial acumen.

The High Wycombe Board of Young Enterprise staged its annual trade fair this month to recognise pupils' most successful business ventures.

Each company team represented a school or college in the area. They had to submit a company report, set up a trade stall, and make a presentation to fellow students and teachers in the Town Hall in St Mary Street.

The overall best company, which will now go on to the Buckinghamshire Finals on May 9, was Novelite, from John Hampden Grammar School. The business created and sold novelty clip-on lights.

The runner up was Rent-a-Mentor, a team from The Royal Grammar School, which provided educational tuition to younger people.

Graham Parcell, Young Enterprise assistant, was impressed by the quality of the companies. He said: "It's a bit of a learning exercise about how business runs. We have a mix here of community schools all the way up to grammar schools, and it's always amazing how well the year tens do. It's fantastic to see how all the students rise to the occasion."

Novelite also took the prize for best company report, and Rent-a-Mentor was the trade stand winner. Stash, from Wycombe High School was awarded best presentation. Other competing schools and colleges were Sir William Borlase's, Amersham and Wycombe College, Holmer Green School, Highcrest Community School, Pipers Corner School and Sir William Ramsay School.

The business projects saw pupils selling hooded tops, eco-friendly bags and accessories, greetings cards, knitted scarves and much more.

The Young Enterprise Company that wins the county finals could go on to the South East and even National finals later this year.
