Broadband without a phone line – from now
The Thames Valley and parts of west London are benefiting from a broadband internet connection that doesn't require a phone line at all - from now wireless broadband.
This true wireless broadband is only available from now, enabling customers to get online with a compact plug and play modem that sits on their desk or tabletop. Laptop users in have a choice - instead of a modem they can also use a now card which slots into the side of the computer. Currently available only in Reading the now card is expected to be obtainable across our coverage area very soon.
The service uses radio technology which means users can set up in any room they like from their bedroom to the living room, garden or kitchen table. The high-speed broadband "always on" access makes it easy to surf the net, send emails, download videos or music, and bank or shop over the internet.

Explains now wireless broadband Chief Operating Officer Keith Hawkins: "Because there's no need to worry about a phone line, no complicated procedures, and no need to hang around waiting for an engineer to turn up, you can do all the setting up yourself straightaway."
Delivery is usually made within 24 hours and the now modem or now card arrives with an easy to use CD-ROM installation in the pack - users can be up and running in minutes. Customer service, via a support line, is free of charge, UK-based and available 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm. There is also a risk-free 30 day trial enabling customers to fully use the technology to make sure it is right for them.
now's radio technology - the broadband access method of the future - is totally secure. Your neighbour cannot "share" your connection.
Potential customers can see if their area is covered through a postcode check on www.now.com. Desktop owners can apply for the existing now modem service with three access speeds - 256 Kbps at £10 per month, 512Kbps at £14 or 1Mbps at £18. This is up to 5, 10 or 20 times faster than a standard dial up internet connection.
The now card uses the same wireless technology as the modem. It costs £14 per month and offers a 512Kbps download speed. It can be used around the greater part of Reading.
"now wireless broadband really is the future of broadband," says Mr Hawkins. "Many people have been reluctant to switch to broadband through fixed telephone or cable lines because of the cost, delays in getting connected and the frustration of dealing with multiple service providers. now solves all that."
