A GUN-toting gang robbed six teenage boys in the space of just two hours.

The mob struck in Hulton Lane, Deane, targeting the boys and stealing small amounts of cash.

No-one was injured in the robberies, but police today launched an appeal for help as they stepped up efforts to catch the gang.

Det Sgt Martin Bell, from Bolton CID's robbery unit, said: "This gang targeted virtually everybody they encountered in the pursuit of money.

"Although nothing of great value was taken, we consider the use of a firearm in any crime to be a very serious matter and we're very keen to apprehend those responsible."

The robbers struck less than 24 hours after a drive-by shooting in Mayor Street near to the entrance of Queen's Park, which left two men injured after they were blasted in the chest and legs with a shotgun.

The incident led to armed police patrolling the streets.Chief Superintendent Andy Durkin, one of Bolton's most senior officers, said: "Anybody who takes weapons on to the streets of Bolton needs to recognise they will face a long time in prison."

The gang of robbers struck a day later, between 10.20pm on August 17 and 12.20am on August 18. They walked up to their victims and one member brandished the gun. Some reports have also suggested one of the thugs had a knife.

Victims described the robbers as a group of seven or eight black youths. The robber reported to be carrying the gun was around 5ft 9ins tall, skinny and had curly black hair.

Police say they want the public's help to find the robbers before they strike again.

The grandmother of one victim, a 16-year-old boy, said: "He was walking home with his friend when the gang approached them and demanded his money and mobile phone.

"He told them he didn't have anything on him. Then one pulled out a knife and another pulled out a gun and searched him to find his belongings.

"They just let them take it all. If the boys weren't so sensible then the outcome could have been a lot worse."

Anyone who witnessed the incidents or has information about the gang should contact Bolton CID on 0161 856 5740 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Two boys, aged 16 and 17, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and released on bail until October 9.
