A burglar who smashed a window to get into a flat and stole a safe has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Carey Defreitas, from Micklefield Road, scaled scaffolding and smashed a hole in a window to get inside the flat, in Wellesbourne Road on January 4.

He then stole the safe belonging to the 26-year-old victim, which had cash inside.

The victim was not at home at the time of the burglary.

Defreitas was arrested on January 14 and was charged on the same day.

The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of burglary and was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Aylesbury Crown Court on Monday, February 23.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £100.

PC Paul Reading, from High Wycombe Local CID, said he was “pleased with the robust sentence” Defreitas received.

“Thames Valley Police takes burglary offences very seriously as they have a significant and lasting impact on the victims, as such we are dedicated to ensuring offenders are prosecuted for their crimes.

“Hopefully this sentence can provide some closure and comfort to the victim in this case.”
