A string of suspected arson attacks in Chesham in the early hours of Saturday morning has led to some residents planning to move away from the area.

Between 2.20am and 2.40am, 11 vehicles were destroyed in four different roads across Chesham.

The fires started in Higham Road and Brushmakers Court where seven cars were believed to be targeted by arsonists, before a further four were destroyed in Asheridge Road and Pond Park.

Four men were arrested on Saturday and have been bailed until two separate dates at the end of next month.

A Higham Road resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It sounded like someone was honking a horn and you could hear the tyres bursting.

“It is normally quiet here - why would someone do that?”

A young couple who live just yards away from the scene on Higham Road – and wanted to remain anonymous – said: “We have only been here 18 months but already we are thinking about moving as a result of this.

“We have never experienced anything like that anywhere else – it was scary.”

Six fire crews were called from across the region to tackle the blaze, with firefighters using a main jet, four hose reels and seven sets of breathing apparatus.

Det Insp Nick Bell from Local CID at Taplow police station, said: "If anyone in the local community has any information about these serious incidents please contact police.

“Also, if you are aware of any suspicious activity that has taken place in recent days or information about anyone purchasing petrol cans from local garages.

“I would ask the local community to remain calm and allow the authorities involved to take appropriate action and conduct a full investigation.

“I want to reassure the local community that there are increased patrols in the area and anyone with concerns is asked to speak to a member of their local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

“Any incidents of crime disorder will be dealt with robustly."
