A homeless man who held his naked ex-girlfriend hostage in a bathroom while threatening to kill and blow up officers at a siege in High Wycombe, today denied attempting to murder two policemen.

Wayne Todd claimed he had suffered a ‘breakdown’ during the evening when he locked himself and his former partner in a bathroom, holding her captive during a two-and-half-hour-long siege which only ended when police Tasered him seven times.

During the shocking ordeal, the court heard how the 46-year-old had stamped on his ex’s back to such a degree that she had soiled herself because of the pain.

He is currently standing trial accused of attempting to murder PC James Francis and PC David Croft who were part of the team who raided the flat in Olympic Way, off Cock Lane, after receiving a 999 call on July 4, last year.

Although neither officer required hospital treatment, Todd is accused of lashing out at the upper chest and neck area of both men with a chisel and crowbar.

He previously admitted a series of crimes, including making threats to kill, ABH and false imprisonment.

Todd, who days earlier was given a restraining order against his ex-partner, also violently attacked himself during the siege, tying a noose around his neck and breaking his leg.

After barricading himself and his ex in the bathroom, Todd smashed a hole in the wall and used a chisel to lash out to prevent police from re-entering the bathroom after they rescued the woman.

The officers retreated and later returned with Tasers and riot shields.

When they broke through the bathroom door they were attacked by a weapon believed to be a crow bar.

Todd told Reading Crown Court: “I am remorseful and can’t believe most of what I’ve heard. I must have had a breakdown. It’s not in my nature, I’m a good person.”

It was claimed he had told police after the incident, ‘you’re lucky they turned the gas off because I would have blown the place up, I was going to take as many of you guys with me as possible.’

Summing up, prosecutor Ian Hope said: “That chisel was not to hand, it was intentionally used to stab through the door.

“It is as violent a scenario as you can imagine only coming out of a Hollywood film.”

“You can have sympathy with a person with depression, who suffers panic attacks and who even had a breakdown, but there is no excuse for the scene on the videos shown of the damage he caused which should just as likely come out of a scene from Call of Duty.”

Todd, of no fixed abode, admitted assaulting two policemen but denied intending to attempt to murder them, which he is standing trial for.

He admitted one count of affray in which he used or threatened unlawful violence towards the two policemen and admitted false imprisonment, destroying property, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm.

The trial continues.
