A homeless man who is accused of attempting to murder two policemen during a lengthy siege while he kept his ex-girlfriend hostage is still waiting to discover his fate.

Wayne Todd, 46, has denied attempted murder, claiming he had suffered a “breakdown” during the evening when he locked himself and his former partner in a bathroom, holding her captive during a two-and-half-hour-long siege.

The nightmare ordeal, which allegedly saw Todd hit the officers with a chisel and crowbar, only ended when police Tasered him seven times.

The trial at Reading Crown Court, which started on Tuesday, is now nearing a conclusion with judge John Reddihough sending the three men and nine women of the jury out to deliberate a verdict on Friday afternoon.

They have not yet reached a verdict.

Todd, of no fixed abode, admitted assaulting two policemen but denied intending to attempt to murder them.

He has admitted one count of affray in which he used or threatened unlawful violence towards the two policemen and admitted false imprisonment, destroying property, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm.

The trial continues.
