Hundreds of anti-terror police swooped on High Wycombe 10 years ago today as the shocking liquid bomb plot to down transatlantic aircraft was unearthed – changing the world forever.

As the attention of the watching world turned to the town, residents were left rocked.

Armed police raided homes, a suitcase of potentially deadly chemicals was found in popular woodland and concerns grew over the threat of harmony in the community.

The search came as a result of one of the UK’s longest-running surveillance missions after the secret service learned of a plot to kill thousands of aircraft passengers flying from the UK to America.

It was feared that the plot would be more catastrophic that the 9/11 attack, almost five years earlier.

Police raided homes across England, focusing their attention on High Wycombe, London and Birmingham.

Properties in the town centre, Totteridge, Micklefield and Downley were investigated, while King’s Wood, in Totteridge Drive, was cordoned-off for days as forensic teams combed the area for evidence and clues.

The impact of those raids are still being felt across the world today. Stricter rules were put in place and airports quickly imposed bans on all liquids being taken aboard planes.

As part of the anniversary, we have looked through our archives to find pictures taken from the scene, and at Heathrow Airport, at the time.
