The parents of a 28-year-old man who tragically died last week have paid tribute to their son who “brought joy and laughter” into their lives.

David Pickup died after he was hit by a car while travelling down Hicks Farm Rise, in High Wycombe, on January 16 – sparking a hit-and-run investigation.

David’s family have now released an emotional tribute following his death, saying “our hearts have been broken and our lives shattered beyond repair”.

The talented musician was involved with three bands - 'Ash and Dave', 'Let There Be Light' and 'This Dying Hour'.

His passion for singing took him across the country and saw him win the Whitbread’s Got Talent competition – performing in the final to an audience of 2,500 people in 2011.

After living in Hong Kong until the age of 5, David returned to High Wycombe and attended Terriers First School, Hazlemere C of E School and Holmer Green Senior School.

The tribute, released by Thames Valley Police, said: "Our son brought joy and laughter into our lives, and to those who knew him. He was known as "smiler" as a baby and that smile remained with him into adulthood.

“Our hearts have been broken and our lives shattered beyond repair.

"Malcolm, Marion, Jonathan and Andrew would like to express their thanks and appreciation to our family and friends; David's many friends; but especially to our family Rob, Sue and Sam for their support, cards and flowers at this time.

"Say goodnight not goodbye our darling."

After working in a range of hospitality roles the 28-year-old "changed direction" and worked at Wycombe Leisure Centre in Handy Cross as a lifeguard.

Friends have released the last song recorded by David, Counting Stars, in his memory and paid tribute to a “wonderful talent”.

Thames Valley Police is continuing to appeal for witnesses in connection with the collision and for any dash cam footage taken in the Micklefield area of High Wycombe between 11.10 and 11.45pm on January 16.

Anyone with any information about the collision should contact the 24-hour Thames Valley Police enquiry centre on 101.
