A brother and sister have been jailed in connection with the death of a cyclist in High Wycombe last year.

Sakib Salim, 28, and his sister Rozia Salim, 27, both of Forest Point, High Wycombe, were sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday following the death of David Pickup, a cyclist who was killed on Hicks Farm Rise on January 16 last year.

Sakib Salim has been banned from driving for 12 years and three months and was jailed for eight and a half years, while Rozia Salim was jailed for a year and two months.

At around 11.40pm, David, a talented musician and lifeguard, was riding downhill when he was hit head on by a black VW Golf driven by Sakib, who had contravened a 'keep left' bollard and was on the wrong side of the road.

The Golf, which was travelling at high speed and was racing a silver car, did not stop at the scene but continued driving towards Totteridge Lane.

When officers went to the home of the registered owner of the Golf, Rozia Salim, she claimed the vehicle had been sold the day before the crash.

Both were charged on November 24 last year - Sakib Salim with a count of causing death by dangerous driving and Rozia Salim with perverting the course of justice.

Both pleaded guilty to the respective offences at previous hearings at the same court - Sakib Salim on April 9 and Rozia Salim on April 20.

Senior investigating officer Sergeant Beth Walton, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “David's death and the events leading up to his death have been devastating to his family and friends.

“I am pleased that the determination of the investigation team, resulted in sufficient evidence being gathered to charge these two defendants and that evidence was enough to cause the defendants to plead guilty, when in previous months they had remained silent and shown no remorse.

“The investigation team was able to prove that Rozia’s brother Sakib was the driver of the vehicle at the time of the collision and she had lied to police to protect him.

“No sentence can change the events of January 16. 2017 and bring David back to his family and friends but it is right that Rozia and Sakib Salim are held to account for their senseless actions.

"I hope they both take the time in prison to reflect on their actions and in doing so, they consider the Pickup family and loss and heartache they will endure for the rest of their lives.”
