Hughenden Road resident blames students for vandalism and rowdy behaviour

A FED up resident said he has had enough of the “outrageous” behaviour of students who live at Hughenden Park Student Village.

Paul Dettman, from Hughenden Road, said he was in favour of the development in principle but said students had kept him and his neighbours "awake several times a week."

The accommodation housing 234 student rooms for Buckinghamshire New University was opened in Hughenden Avenue last October.

Mr Dettman,33, added: “My complaint covers not only noise but vandalism and drunken and loutish behaviour.”

He said to add to this an application has been made for a takeaway van at the car park at 125A, Hughenden Road.

The application for street trading consent has been put forward to Wycombe District Council by Amar Masood Kayani.

It proposes selling food from from 6pm to 3am Sunday to Thursday and 6pm to 4am on Friday and Saturdays.

Mr Dettman said the van is clearly aimed at students and the late night hours are “totally unacceptable”.

The IT trainer, who works for a software company, said he has strongly objected to the application along with the area's Neighbourhood Watch.

He said: “I object to noise and litter. The van is after hours and all night long literally.

“Really I think it is the responsibility of the university to explain to us guys what their vision is and why we should have students practically in our front garden.

“Talk to us about their plans otherwise they are going to annoy people more and more.”

Trevor Nicholls, pro vice chancellor for campus and facilities, said the university has a community liaison group set up to talk to residents about the impact of halls in their area.

The group includes councillor Tony Green and two residents who represent the community from the Hughenden Park area.

He said: “So far this group has met on three occasions and other than some very minor issues of disturbance, which were not at the new residences, no concerns had been raised.

“We appreciate Mr Dettman’s concerns and would like to put him in touch with our community liaison group.

“We have lodged our opposition to the application for a burger van on grounds including noise and litter.”

I thought they weren't supposed to park within 3 miles of the site either, and they park on my road which at times blocks the road and causes traffic issues.

There already is a kebab van next to Jewsons so do we really need another one at the other end of the road

Instead of building these residential student blocks could they not have dug some sort of underground caving system to house these neanderthals and then maybe throw some scraps down to them to help with there impending hang overs?

Kebab vans equals flock of vultures or pack of hyenas and the resulting environmental impact and mess.
.
They 'eat' your money of course. They wouldn't touch their own food with a twelve metre devil's prong. It's a plot to kill everybody off - obesity , saturated fats , chemicals etc
.
AND THE SMELL !

Trouble is where else are they supposed to park as the uni stupidly doesn't give them anywhere on the site to park?

I too live on Hughenden Road and have spoken to many residents regarding this issue. The council will receive written opposition to this food van and as far as I understood from the corner shop owner he is not in favour of this and objects to the van parking on his car park. With double yellow lines on Hughenden Road and Hughenden Avenue, where else are the customers supposed to park? In our private parking bays I guess.NOT

I am a student at a different University. I have lived in Hall of residence and do know how noisey it is.
However it is usually a small minority of student who cause the noise daily. Also the typical view of student being lazy and always drunk and hungover is very wrong. Very few of the student i know who i am and friends with act like this
I think many need to re think their opnion of students.
The noise i admit must be very annoying and i do feel for those but dont see it as students as a whole but just a few who cause ALOT of noise

i agree with the previous comment not all students will be causing noise , some of them can bearly strum up the energy to ever get out of the festering beds. when they do they normally get straight back in again two minutes later

I was only a student 10-13 years ago and am not anti-student but it has got awful since the halls were built. I live on the route from town to the halls and it has become so noisy with fights and singing almost every evening. We have people kicking our front door so hard the house rattles. We have had sick down the front of our house, takeaway food through the letter box. I have lived here 5 years and accept it will get a bit noisy being near town but it has got far far worse since the halls were built. I have two small kids and have enough broken nights without this as well.

That could just be antics of any drunk person, they don't need to be students.

Also if behaviour is so bad, shouldn't there be police officers around to keep people in line?

But that takeaway van needs to get rejected fast. They are nothing but a nuisance when coupled with drunk students, which in this case is very likely.

Yes we where but in our days we where sent off to Reading or Oxford. Our sleepy suburb town of High Wycombe is not equipped to deal with this loutish behaviour and Tomfoolery...

We live towards the top of Hughenden Ave and can hear the shouting at silly o'clock, I hope the council doesn't grant the licence application, we have a kebab van 2 mins walk away along the footpath, why do we need another one.
I have no issues with students having a good time, but show some courtesy to those of us who have done the student thing, and now get up early for work or have young children.
And just think, there are plans to build even more flats, I spoke to one of the builders who told me another three to make six in total!!!
If you are disturbed by these inconsiderate people make sure it's reported to the police, then when the council review the kebab application it should be blocked due to the complaints, Call the 0845 number, not 999 though!

I would like to update this story. The University have not invited me to take part in their committee and have not responded to my email of 11th February. We had music at 4:30am again today. Trevor's comment about these issues not being 'at the residences' is a disgrace. I watched the groups I am thinking about walk past my house, up along Hughenden Avenue and into their 'residence'. It does not matter WHERE the issue is, only WHO is causing it, and it is a very small minority of the 234 newcomers who are spoiling the reputation of all the others. I hope peer pressure from their friends will help in this instance, as it so clearly works when they are buying drinks.
