Headteacher defends The Beaconsfield School's reputation

A HEADTEACHER has jumped to the defence of his school after the mayor of Beaconsfield claimed its reputation was in decline.

Councillor Richard Keith has accused a group of pupils from The Beaconsfield School of “anti-social behaviour” in the Old Town.

In an open letter to the headteacher, which was attached to a town council agenda last month, Cllr Keith said the group has caused distress for residents and businesses in Malthouse Square and Ayesbury End.

He said the teenagers “are causing problems in the local community and adding to the decline in the local reputation of The Beaconsfield School”.

But in a terse response headteacher John Fletcher said: “I am sure you are aware that this is a general issue and not all the students involved are from our school...”

“The overwhelming majority of the students in school are fantastic ambassadors....It would be a shame that the action of a few are allowed by people in positions of responsibility to tarnish the reputation of the majority.”

He said the group of youngsters go to several local schools, but meet up in Beaconsfield.

He added: “I deeply regret that students from this school have been involved in these incidents but they all occurred in the evenings or at weekends/holiday times...

“Unfortunately many of the problems are beyond our control and we find ourselves having to deal with deep-seated social and economic problems which manifest themselves in different ways...

“I think it is important that all parties who have positions of leadership in the local community come together to ensure that the wrong message is not communicated....

"I trust my response will be recorded for the town records as you have requested that your email to me has been recorded."

Cllr Keith had also referred to two cases of vandalism to porches at St Mary’s Church over the Christmas period, which resulted in padlocks and chains being used to secure the premises.

But Mr Fletcher told the Bucks Free Press: “My understanding is that three pupils from the school were part of the group that has been congregated in the church grounds.

“They have always been polite to the vicar and have moved on when asked. We are not aware that they have been linked to [the] incident that was reported in the press.”

Police said the vandalism at St Mary’s is being investigated.

Meanwhile, town councillor Sandy Saunders said the reports about youngsters were “nothing” compared to the behaviour of drunk adults in the Old Town on Friday and Saturday nights.

He referred to noise and shouting into the early hours, broken glass and several reported incidents of people urinating through letterboxes.

About 60 people attended a meeting at the Fitzwilliam Centre last month to discuss the perceived rise of anti-social behaviour.

The meeting heard about a catalogue of incidents, including smashed windows and plants being pulled up.

Various people have said there is a lack of things for youngsters to do in Beaconsfield, while the town council is currently looking at the possibility of creating a BMX park.

What a complete idiot. Good of Richard Keith to start blaming schools. The school is an easy target for the ego-centric Mayor of Beaconsfield. He wouldn't dare mention the youngsters' parents as they are the ones that vote to keep him and his mates in their little club. He doesn't seem to care about the adult misbehaviour ... they are voters too.
.
Where do his children go to school? That would be interesting to find out. Did they pass their 11+ and have the advantage of a selective education, are they educated privately with an even bigger advantage or do they attend the school? If they go to the Beaconsfield school does he have another agenda? These are questions the BFP should ask.

Hmmm. Were the hordes of youths in the schools uniform and did the issues occur during school hours? Unless the answer is yes to both it has absolutely nothing to do with the school. It's just the usual society issues and parenting problems allowing this to happen. I wonder if there’s a decent councillor available to tackle those aspects instead of throwing generalisations at the school? Richard – do you know any good councillors?? The school’s an easy political target but it’s wholly misguided and thoughtless. Feels unprofessional and personal too - I wonder if there’s a hidden agenda?

Personally I think it’s a great school and sure, it has its fair share of oiks, but don’t all schools? By being do general it implicates my child and I’m very unhappy about that. I now have an even dimmer view of our Mayor.

And I wholly support the view re Saturday nights. I’ve been there when it’s been quite loutish and I’ve felt quite uncomfortable while leaving the area. Why isn’t Richard concerned about this? Because these adults bring revenue to the local businesses so he can turn a blind eye??

So let’s pick on a bunch of youths, blame the local school for bad parenting and pretend we’re tackling the issues in the community. Can't wait for the re-election. Shame shame shame!

It would be too much to ask the police to actually do their job and patrol the Old Town on Fri and Sat nights (as well as the area around 'Revolutions' in the New Town. They are utterly useless.

Please get your facts right before posting comments. Both of Cllr Keith's children have attended the Beaconsfield School and he has always been a big supporter of the school and has served time as a Governor. The school has not been the same since the departure of Alex Russell.

I know all of the 'anti-social youths' your talking about and there was a meeting in Beaconsfield last week where surprisingly to most people that read the bucks free press the youths and the elderly spoke about what was happening in beaconsfield and most of the anti-social behavior was from adults coming in and out of the pubs! So don't go blaming the youth just because they are an 'easy target'

Whenever I have walked past this school in Beaconsfield the Students behaviour has been exemplorary. They are very Polite and Well-mannered. Compared to that run down and demotivated school-children that have to wear those those awful blue shirts at the Misbourne School in Great Missenden they are a blessing. Why oh why do we have to type-cast and segregate children at school by making them wear these hideous blue shirts, they are demeaning and all the other schools' children laugh at them.

Good on you, Mr F.

When will people accept the fact that the behaviour of children is the responsibility of THEIR PARENTS, first and foremost.

A school's job is to educate them academically - it is their parents' job to educate them on how to be a good citizen.

As others have said above, what these children get up to between 3pm and 8:30am Mon-Fri and all day Sat/Sun is absolutely nothing to do with their school.

I've heard interesting reasons as to why Cllr Keith is no longer a governer. I'd better not say what they are in this forum, but perhaps some digging by the BFP would discover more!
