4:17am Friday 7th May 2010 in Elections By Rebecca Cain
TORY David Lidington has kept hold of the Aylesbury seat which he has held since 1992 and increased his majority.
Mr Lidington took 52.2 per cent of the votes which was up from 49.1 per cent at the last general election.
He received 27, 736 votes of the 53, 273 turnout with Liberal Democrat candidate Steven Lambert coming in second with 15, 118. Labour candidate Kathryn White came third with 6, 695 votes and UK Independence Party Chris Adams took 3,613.
The swing was 2.1 per cent from the Lib Dems to the Conservatives.
Mr Lidington said: “I am feeling elated at the moment. I am delighted and humbled by the vote of confidence.
“I think people were also voting for a change of government. I think they were voting for a government that would make a fresh start- that would try to rebuild the economy and stop going the way of Greece.”
He said the way forward for him now will depend on who is in government but he said he wants to concentrate on housing, High Speed 2 and people's concern about finding jobs.
He added: “I imagine with High Speed 2 really to rally local opinion against the routes proposed.”
UKIP's Chris Adams attacked the Liberal Democrats in his thank you speech. He said: “After the day that I have had I am not very pleased with the Liberal Democrats of all people. Tonight one of the quotes was: 'The only difference between the BNP and UKIP is that UKIP wear suits.'
“In my party we have Muslim candidates, Asian candidates, Afro-Caribbean candidates and we have Rustie Lee. I don't know how the Liberal Democrats can say we are a racist party. I am still waiting for an apology from Steven Lambert from the other week.”
He added that Nigel Farage, who is fighting for the Buckingham seat today against John Bercow, was recovering after he was involved in a light aircraft crash the previous morning.
He said Nigel has a punctured lung, fractures in his back and broken ribs. He will be in hospital until at least Monday missing the Buckingham count.
Regarding Mr Adams' attack on his party Steven Lambert said: “I need to find out what has gone on and once I know we will take it inside the party. ”
He said he was pleased with the result which increased by 0.8 per cent. He said: “I am really pleased with our result.
“The Lib Dem message is out there. We are the party of progressive change.” He said he was looking forward to standing for the seat again.
Labour Kathryn White said: “I have been going around this campaign and what I have heard time and time again is that people want local candidates from the area. Having a local woman standing is a first and it really matters.”
