New Wycombe MP to launch walking scheme

New Wycombe MP Steve Baker New Wycombe MP Steve Baker

ONE of the first jobs for Wycombe’s new MP will be to launch a scheme to get the town walking on Saturday.

Conservative Steve Baker, who was voted in at Thursday's General Election, will walk through a giant paper banner in the Eden Centre at 11am this morning to signal the launch of the campaign.

High Wycombe town mayor Julie Pritchard will also be helping to kick the event off.

Walk Wycombe is a Transport for Buckinghamshire initiative to increase the number of people who walk in and around High Wycombe, as part of a healthy lifestyle.

To help local walkers, five notice boards have been installed around the town centre, on which 3D maps highlight three new walks – Town Walk, Heritage Walk and Rye Walk.

He won't need to try very hard. When petrol reaches £1.50/litre by this time next year we will all be walking everywhere!

Surely there are more important matters than this? Not that local walkers are unimportant, but this doesn't even appear to be linked to a local transport improvement plan.

I have to drive to work from school and back otherwise I would not be able to pick up my children on time, or get to work on time.

Congratulation Mr Baker, I am so glad to see that you have your prioities right and feel that walking "through a giant paper banner in the Eden Centre" is top of your list.

Also, BFP... those threee walks don't seem to be on the site you mention?

Well what can one say?
That's why I suppose the launch was cancelled a few weeks ago.
I HATE being told by a load of fat cats what's good for me.
Could they be more patronising?

I am sure they can and will prove it over and over again in the near future.

That's a huge problem with having such a tory stronghold. This council will now think it is unbeatable and will ride even more roughshod over what people want.

Health is one of the most important aspects of our life.

It helps if it's good for as long as possible.

We don't walk enough any more. very often the first thing we do when we go for a walk is get in the car first...!! Daft or what!

Just outside of, but very close to Wycombe - walking distance - and through Wycombe too, we have some of the most attractive walking routes you could hope to find.

We should maximise their use, keep these rights of way going and do ourselves and everyone else the greatest favour we can.

It is not a trivial initiative.

After an energetic town walk, a nice in-town picnic area would be handy though... Trees, shade, pergolas, benches, water features etc etc etc etc etc

For my pesto and banana sannies! Yay!

What the hell has our lifestyle got to do with them??????? patronising gits. If they're concerned about the environment, stop building houses, if they're concerned about traffic congestion, stop building houses, if they're concerned out our health, stop the closing of hospitals. As for walking or driving, we pay the fuel, that's our business.

I enjoy walking, but in our unpredictable climate it can be hard work. Also, maybe Mr Baker can help remove some of the hills around here?
+
Or maybe install some escalators - up Amersham and Marlow hills would be a good start. Cyclists could use them too. Get some of the unemployed to turn the winch handle to move the conveyor along :-)

HI Demoness
Here is the underlying message to my comments . Walking is nice but >>>>
Issue is -
The council needs to deliver decent public transport --More buses, longer hours of operation, all night buses to rural areas and lower costs of travel

The fundamental problem is to much commuter car journeys because we dont have a decent public transport system servicing High Wycombe Town with links to other key regions

Morag says...
11:00am Sat 8 May 10

I don't understand what is wrong with making it easier and more pleasant for those who are able to walk and choose to do so? If it is well publicised more people will know about it. It has nothing to do with politics.

Walk Wycombe and then you can stop even more buses running.

I live in lane end and now on a saturday / sunday we have no direct buses from Adsa to Lane end, so if you want to do your shopping there or even work there, you now have to get a bus from asda into town, transfer everything over and then get a bus from Town to lane end.

AbsolutlyBl**dy stupid, you want cars off the roan then you stop th buses running.

how does that work?

I suggested to the pre-election canvassers that came to my door that they should all take a walk.
.
But they took umbrage (a kind of big gas-guzzling car) instead.
.
Which sort of defeated the purpose of what I said. I found the Jehovahs Witnesses far more polite and accommodating and at least they walked to my door. However I didn't believe their dogmatic brain-washing fairy stories either.

The Hiccup party? You have got to be joking, they just kept on repeating the same old policies. I quite like the Sneezies, until it got around to the spring and then they got a bit manic.

J B Blackett says...

Good thought , Morag , about the Hiccups - it never registered with me they were so repetitive (same old same old) but at least they are consistent . But I suspect they might change their ways once they got their hands on the key (to the door of number 10).
.
Sneezies - never heard of them. Are they connected to the MPs in the Dopey , Grumpy or Sleepy Parties ? Do they lean to the Left or the Right and are they trade unionists from the ol' factories ? Somebody nose the answer.

Is their party leader the well-travelled Captain Nostril from the Nautilus boat ? He usually stands on the bridge and waves a handkerchief (semaphore, you know - a dying skill in this digital age)
