ELDERLY and vulnerable people should get a flu jab to help their chances of staying fit and healthy over the festive period, Buckinghamshire County Council says.

While most people know that over-65s can get the flu jab for free at their GP surgery, many people with long-term health conditions aren't aware that they too are eligible.

Also, many may not realise that their condition might mean that they could get severe complications if they do contract flu.

BCC's public health team are making a special appeal to people with diabetes, reduced immunity, heart, kidney or liver disease, respiratory problems or neurological disorders such as Parkinson's to come forward and make sure they get themselves protected with a free flu jab.

BCC Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing Patricia Birchley said: "Flu can be a really serious illness for more vulnerable people, including those with an existing long-term health condition. The free jab is the best way to stay free of flu, so do make sure you take it up if you have one of these conditions by booking an appointment with your GP surgery.

"Likewise, if someone you know has one of these conditions, make sure they're aware of the availability of the flu jab and how it can help to stop Christmas being memorable for the wrong reasons."

Many GP surgeries will contact people in eligible groups, but if you haven’t yet been invited by your surgery and you think you are eligible, you are recommended to call to make an appointment.
