POLICE said they have not received an direct reports or made arrests over a major credit card fraud at Asda in High Wycombe.

The supermarket has said it is conducting an inquiry after customers found cash had been stolen using their cards – but guaranteed no-one would lose out.

One customer said he had £1,400 withdrawn from ATM machines in the US and Pakistan.

Jon Brewer, Thames Valley Police fraud investigator, said: “We are aware that a number of card fraud incidents have occurred at Asda in Cressex, however we have not received any direct reports relating to the incidents at this time.

“We will continue our enquiries and I ask that anyone who has been a victim of card fraud at the store to call the Police Enquiry line on 0845 8 505 505.”

About half a dozen chip and pin machines were removed as part of the investigation at the Holmes Farm Way store.

A statement from ASDA said: “We are aware of the situation and can confirm we have had a number of customers contact the High Wycombe store to say they've had fraudulent activity on their credit or debit cards and we are currently investigating this in conjunction with the banks and the police.

“At Asda the safety and security of customer data is of utmost importance to us. Importantly, any innocent customer who is the victim of any type of card fraud is protected by the Banking Code, which means that they will not lose out financially.

“As with all their financial transactions, customers always need to be extra vigilant when they use their credit or debit cards and should always report anything suspicious or strange to their bank or credit card provider.”

It said: “Customers can be assured that we are taking all the necessary steps to ensure the continued safety and security of customer data.

“As with all issues around card security we work very closely with all the relevant authorities to ensure that everything possible is done to mitigate fraudulent activity and to continue to develop technology to stay ahead of fraudsters.”

One customer, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had had £1,400 stolen from US and Pakistan through more than 25 withdrawals.

He said his mother had also had £300 stolen after shopping at the store.

He said: “I was absolutely shocked, I couldn’t believe it. When chip and pin came in you thought this sort of thing wouldn’t happen any more – that is clearly not the case.”

I had HSBC fraud protection call me up last week about an attempt to withdraw £90 on my card in India. Luckily HSBC stopped the transaction and cancelled the card!

I looked at my card activity and I had only ever use the card in B&Q, Morrisons and ASDA in High Wycombe, but mainly ASDA, so I guess this story gives me a better idea!

May try and use cash from now on?

Stokey, you best call the police and report it then. Its unlikely that HSBC will contact ASDA, the more cases the police know about the more they can link them up. Like they would be able to narrow down which tills people used, what times they used them and eventually work out if there were particular staff members involved.

I also got a call from my credit card provider last week saying that attempts had been made to withdraw money in the US. I used the card in ASDA a few days earlier so it seems to be linked to this store. Have called the police like they asked and now have a crime reference number. Although I am financially covered by the credit card company it's very annoying and inconvenient as the credit card was blocked and I have been waiting for a new card to be issued. One good thing is it has reduced my spending temporarily during the credit crunch!

I will be advising her and my wife to make a formal complaint to the Police

well what a load of rubbish that comment is. I rang that number as my card has been cloned at ASDA and the police are not going to do anything about it & not even going to log it!!!! I was told by whoever I spoke to at that number (forgot to take a name)that the bank will be looking into it and the bank may report it to the police so I don't need to!!!I'm even more angry now!!!!

My card was also cloned and I had a message from the bank saying that it had had 4 attempted withdrawls at atm's in America!Thankfully the transactions were blocked!

I only used my card once last month on the 18th at Asda!!

More fool them for cloning a card attached to an account that generally only has minus money in!!!!

I rang the number and they could not have been more helpful - I even got a call from John Brewer who also was very informative and quite frank about the situation. It appears that it is a widespread problem and not just (although significant amounts) Asda!

It is my opinion that some security procedures at the store are somewhat lacking - And should be reviewed....A little like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted methinks!!!!

gungun thanks to your comment I have rung the number again and this time they were very helpful and have logged my call and information so I now can calm down and I feel better knowing that hopefully something will be done about these thieving scumbags

According to today's national press, the scam was caused by a device being implanted during manufacture of the ATMs in China. It recorded details when the machine was used and sent them to a gang in Lahore, Pakistan, by mobile phone. Just out of interest, what bank's ATM was it? What a great pity they had their ATMs made for them in China, where security seems not up to the standards we expect here.

Cheers! I did report it to the police in the end, they took the details and gave me a crime reference number.

When you say ATM do you mean the 'Chip and pin' payment machines at the till? as this is the only place I have ever used the card that got done?
