A PILOT mountain bike project for young people is being launched next week, with the aim of setting up a permanent club in a South Bucks wood.

Hodgemoor Wood near Amersham will play host to a skills course for 10 to 14-year-olds run by South Bucks District Council, which starts on Saturday, November 16.

British Cycling qualified coaches will deliver expert coaching on bike set up and maintenance, trail tips, drop-offs, braking techniques, riding positions, warm up, front and rear wheel lifts and other essential mountain biking skills.

It is hoped that the pilot course will prove popular and develop into a junior mountain bike club based at the wood, which is owned by the Forestry Commission.

Anita Cranmer, SBDC portfolio holder for community, said: "This is a must for any young cyclist who wishes to enhance their off-road bike handling skills.

"The location is ideal for mountain biking and there are also facilities nearby so that parents and carers can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while they're waiting for the riders to return."

The course takes place on a trail looping through Hodgemoor Wood - a Site of Special Scientific Interest - and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty halfway between Beaconsfield and Amersham.

The four week course costs £12. Riders are required to bring their own bikes although helmets will be available to borrow.

Good idea. I used to take my kids up there when they were younger. Good fun and on the other side of the road are the dirt jumps
