A 'GREEN corridor' will disappear during building work alongside the London Underground network in Buckinghamshire, a concerned councillor said last night.

Cllr Pam Appleby told colleagues at Chiltern District Council last night “very drastic work” was due to start next month along the line around Amersham and Chalfont and Latimer stations.

The Liberal Democrat representative for Amersham Common said people travelling up Stanley Hill in the town would be “in for a shock” at seeing the results of the work.

She said at last night's full council meeting: “It's going to be very drastic. They are going to clear, I should think, 80 per cent of the vegetation, including the trees that are along the line at the moment.

“They are going to build an alleyway along the line, so there is going to be a lot more concrete and hard stuff than there is at the moment.

“The lovely green corridor is going. We are all fighting as hard as we can for a good replanting programme, but we are not getting on very well.”

Cllr Appleby added the work, which is set to take about a year to complete, was needed because the embankment was “unstable”.
