Amersham alworths to close

A STORE in Amersham is to close next month – less than a year after opening.

General retailer alworths, which welcomed its first customers on November 12 last year, will shut on September 12 after it said the landlord of the building served notice to vacate the premises.

The firm is looking for new premises in the town but has so far not been able to find anything suitable.

He added: “All members of our staff have been consulted and we are actively trying to liaise with the incoming retailer to maximise any redeployment opportunities for our team affected by the closure.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team in Amersham for their hard work and dedication over the last ten months, resulting in a very successful period of time for us.

"I would also like to thank all of our Amersham customers who have thoroughly embraced alworths, which makes this situation even more disappointing.”

The Amersham branch, in Sycamore Road, was the second alworths to open in Britain after one opened in Didcot.

It was set up to take over from Woolworths, after the popular high street retailer went into administration in 2008.

Research suggests more than 300 former Woolworths stores are still empty.

Isn't the one in Beaconsfield still empty?

There is a furniture store in Beaconsfield that is closing down after many years. Perhaps that would be a good site for an Alworths store?

Seems strange that the landlords have served notice to leave. Usually business leases are at least 5 years. Also it says they are liaising with the incoming retailer to sort out opportunities for the staff. So place is being re-rented out?
Have Alworths not been paying their rent or something? Landlords don't just kick people out for no reason.

successful businesses don't just walk away from a customer base after 10 months of a "very successful period of time for us"

Alworths probably took over the original Woolworths lease which was probably due to expire around now. Alworths no doubt got it for a cheap price as the landlord was happy to accept any rent compared with no rent from Woolies.

They've probably got a better offer from another tenant, like the Focus store in Wycombe.

Points of Information

A lot of that row of Amersham on the Hill shops, including several charity ones, are owned by local christian philanthopist Gary,co-founder of the 'Entertainer' Amersham, toy-shop chain.
--
Alworth offerings in Sycamore Road Amersham have been very welcome, in the 9 months or so here, since they opened.
--
Lovely plants were on offer there in the spring. Rose-bushes and gladioli.

I believe they even had a facility to buy-in unwanted scrap gold from Amersham residents!
As well as a Photo-Me booth.

Reasonably-priced other, household goods, if not the prior-encompassing range of Woolies.
--
Polite and helpful staff.
--
Is the Sainsbury move-in to the present Iceland store cut and dried?
--
Possibly not.

I hear of resistance from local houseowners to Sainsbury block-buying local houses/retail premises.

Chiltern District Council, based in Amersham, and
no doubt the Amersham ex-Mayor's Rotary Rugby Club, and the Amersham Round Table and the Amersham Town Coucil, Friends of CDC Golf Course will look at the way forward soon, when they meet-with the local chamber of commerce.

Note that there are, rightly, quite impregnable and well-subsidence-resi
stant 'Chinese walls' between embedded vested interests.
---
Otherwise, Amersham governance might be deemed a rotten borough, as in 1832.

Perish the thought that this area is run by complacent jobsworths, when they are not on sabbatical.

this would never be the case, you can't transfer a lease from a company that ha closed down.im pretty sure the landlord would have made them sign up for a new 5 year lease

As a new business - wouldn't you want a "short term" lease to see whether a business in the area was viable. This is probably the reason and the landlord has had a better offer from a more established company. Maybe another local supermarket will compete with those already established in the Amersham area. Not what we really want, of course.
