Snow latest: Gritter and BMW in M40 crash

Snow has been causing havoc on the roads Snow has been causing havoc on the roads

A GRITTING lorry has been involved in a crash with a BMW on the M40.

Police said the drivers appear to have escaped with minor injuries after the accident between junctions 2 and 1a.

Officers were called out at about 11.15am.

Inspector Chris Evans said: “A BMW X5 has collided with a gritter lorry. It appears they are minor injuries at this time, it's still early stages but it doesn't look like there are serious injuries at all.”

It is not known yet how many people were in the vehicles.

The vehicles are on the hard shoulder and no longer causing any delays.

Insp. Evans warned drivers to be cautious.

Although the motorway has been cleared by The Highways Agency, ice and snow remains on the ground.

He told motorists: “Just take care in these conditions, it's still very snowy and icy out there. Slow down and take things easy.”

Buckinghamshire County Council said it was not its own gritter and must have belonged to The Highways Agency.

The agency could not confirm this earlier but told the BFP this afternoon it is asking drivers give its gritters plenty of space.

Last night there were reports of 100 cars being abandoned on the M40 between junctions 6 and 4.

However, the agency said today, only about ten at most were actually abandoned.

It did say however that many motorists were stuck behind an HGV that had crashed and were delayed for a time but officials worked hard to clear vehicles affected.

The agency also said in a statement: "During periods of severe weather our advice is not to travel unless your journey is essential.

"If you do need to travel, to be prepared, to check local and national forecasts, to listen to travel bulletins, to take an emergency kit with you including warm clothes, food, water, boots, a torch and spade, and to drive with care, even where roads have been treated.

"We are continuing to work hard to keep roads on our network open.

Is the gritter still functional? I do hope it hasn't been damaged.

There are only a handful of these machines anyway and surely to lose one would be a major loss in the battle against the dreadful snow?

BMW Driver = T.WA.T.
I was on the M40 last night, the overhead gantry was saying "Accident ahead" 30 mph, and they were all going past me at speed of at least 50 mph.

I was driving on m40 last night, an accident was going to happen soon or later. Some people were still driving so fast. Some people need to learn how to drive I think

I have seen a Land Rover, a Mitsubishi Shogun, a Range Rover, and a 4x4 pickup to name only a few all lost to the hedgerows in bad weather. They seem to feel invulnerable and fail to realise that the laws of physics still apply to them. You may have better traction with four wheel drive, but your braking and cornering are no better than a two wheel drive. Plus, of course, the 4x4 vehicle is usually much taller and has a high centre of gravity leading to less stability.

The problem with 4 x 4 drivers is that they only normally need them to mount the pavement to park outside the schools which are usually within a 10 minute walk of their house. They have no idea how to drive at the best of times, throw snow into the equation and they will be off the road in seconds.
As for BMW drivers, if only indicators weren't such an expensive optional extra!

Don't talk bo!!ocks. It's nothing to do with the type of 4x4 you drive, it's to do with the driver of the vehicle. I have a very competent 4x4 driver in my household, got up and down the roads no problem last night!

There was a Smart car on its side in Castle Street yesterday. Does that make all Smart car drivers incompetent?

No, but Smart car drivers obviously don't value their lives very highly, otherwise why buy a Smart car? Same for Gee-Whiz drivers.

The problem with most 4X4s these days is that many of them are "sport" models (Range Rover Sport, BMW X5 etc), and they have low profile tyres. Low profile tyres are hopeless in the snow, and so the 4X4 aspect becomes irrelevant. And too many people rely on the car's back up safety systems these days (ABS, traction control etc), rather than driving safely in the first place!

ABS increases braking distances on loose surfaces anyway.
